Fine Arts Classes: “It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.”-Dr.Seuss Fun with Photography: Students will learn beginning photography skills. Each week we will learn about a new aspect of photography, including landscape, lines, shapes, light, color, and portraits. Class time will be used to share photos, participate in a lesson, and practice taking pictures. There will be a photography assignment to complete at home each week. We will have a photo exhibit on the last day of class to share with the families. Instructor: Allison Brown, BRES Teacher Tuesdays: 3:45–4:45 p.m. Jan. 22; Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26; Mar. 5, 12, 19. Kid Cuisine: Students will take a trip around the world by learning to prepare and enjoy simple recipes from various countries. Students will also learn fun facts about the food and culture of each country that we “visit”. This cooking experience will be a creative, tasty, and informative way to further incorporate the Global Gateway Program into the lives of students at Bristow Run. Students will be engaged in playful, colorful, and totally hands-on projects using a variety of media. Students will bring home amazing masterpieces, including snowman bottles, a centerpiece, a hat and scarf set, a cotton owl, and scrapbook pages. (Min. 8 students – Max. 12 students) Fee: $75 Mixed-Media Art Exploration: Students will explore and create mixed-media art projects using clay, wire, wood, paper, and more. The ideas and inventions will follow a seasonal theme. The children’s art will come alive with this focus on 3-D art. Please bring a smock or old t-shirt. (Min. 8 students - Max 12 students; there will be only four spots for second grade students) Fee: $73 Readers Theater: Students become excited and enthusiastic about reading when participating in Readers' Theatre. In this class, students will develop scripts, perform in groups, and practice using their voice to depict characters from stories, ranging from fractured fairy tales to nonfiction. Through this activity, students have the opportunity to develop fluency and vocal inflection, enhance comprehension of what they are reading, gain self-confidence, work cooperatively, and integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The theater requires no sets, costumes, props, or memorized lines. Instead of acting out literature as in a play, the performer’s goal is to read a script aloud effectively, enabling the audience to visualize the action. Performers bring the text alive by using voice, facial expressions, and some gestures. Instructor: Charlene Manning, BRES Teacher. These things are fun and fun is good.”-Dr. Seuss Basic Cheerleading Let’s Go Bristow Run! Let’s Go!! No experience required! Come and learn basic Cheer Leading skills- including chants, cheers, motions, and jumps. The kids will also make some crafts to complement their cheers. Bristow Run Yogis: This fun filled class will use animated poses, music, and imagination to stretch and strengthen the students' developing bodies. Yoga can benefit children by improving flexibility, enhancing concentration, boosting self-confidence, relaxing minds, and improving general well-being. Students will be taught the rules and fundamentals of the game. In addition, they will get the opportunity to demonstrate those learned fundamentals in scrimmages and skill competitions. They will learn about the history of the game and key players of the past and present. There will be prizes, fun, and so much more. No previous experience is required to be a member of this club. Advanced begins with openings most popular with scholastic players – how to play them, how to stop them. Challenging puzzles and instructional games demonstrate opening strategies. Students use these strategies in their own games and record their moves in algebraic chess notation. (Min. 6 students – Max. 12 students) Fee: $100 Club 24: Challenge 24 is a fun, fast paced math game that strengthens students’ skills in mathematical reasoning and mental computations. There are a variety of levels, but all challenge you to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division with up to four numbers on a card to come up with an answer of 24. Children will compete in a school wide competition; the top competitors will have the opportunity to join their instructor at the Prince William County competition in the spring. A platform game is a side-scrolling, Mario-type game where students program characters and a two-dimensional obstacle course. They attempt to avoid or overcome enemies and reach an end goal on multiple levels. At the end of class, students take home a copy of the game they have created. (Min. 10 students – Max. 20 students) Fee: $116 Robot Adventures: Dodge through asteroids, fight dinosaurs, trek through a fierce blizzard, and storm the castle walls! Join us for these robot adventures using hands on science. We will use modular systems and physics to complete these challenges. For each adventure, the students will create and design obstacles, implement simple and compound machines, and learn about various robotic end effectors to solve problems.
