Summary of my Activities and Future Plans The beginning of my academic career was closely related to the areas of social inequality at the individual level in the labor market. Through the past years I have entered the area of social inequality but at the organizational level. The area of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations has been in its very first stage. There were no studies in Israel that explored the huge phenomenon of the civil society and its carriers –the nonprofit sector- within an organizational perspective. This has been a significant lead of faith into an area that very little was written about. While the past projects of my academic path have only pointed without being possible to fully explore and justify the existence of social inequality at the macro level made it possible to point out how the organizational aspects of nonprofit organizations are crucial in defining the level of successfully performing in providing human services to the weak groups of society. A specific aspect of this interest in the nonprofit organizations was my involvement in the area of nonprofit human services. In the years that I served as the chair of the department of Human Services I was able to advance the long delayed -3 yearsauthorization of the MA program in the department. The interdisciplinary approach reflected in the research and teaching in the area of nonprofit human services has been well received in the literature as well as in my activity inside and outside the university. 17 RITA RIKOULA MANO january 2014 Currently I continue with this area of studies into the direction of using the Philanthropy background. On the basis of the data base on Nonprofit Philanthropy Institutions I have submitted a proposal for a filed study that incorporates knowledge about the allocation of funds from Philanthropy organizations to the nonprofit organizations in Israel. The study will introduce the notion of "Performance mix" that measures the social impact of the nonprofit sector. This is an area that has been almost impossible to examine till now but the evidence from other western societies shows that this is an important subject that needs to be examined and advanced especially now that the economic crisis has generate a civil crisis regarding financial security and increased the size of weak groups. The allocation of funds from Philanthropy Institutions is one major route to a possible improvement of the weak status of these groups. An ISF proposal submitted this year intends to provide the funds to support this idea in an extended research project. It is nevertheless my intention to publish two to three papers that link nonprofit theories with Philanthropy studies. The aim of these papers will be to introduce new concepts that define the funds allocation levels and the actual social impact of these allocations in delivering more effective and efficient social services to remote geographic areas. The main contribution to scientific research combining different theories to form an interdisciplinary approach is not frequently and easily pursued in the area of civil society, philanthropy and nonprofit organization. Addressing social issues using a critical organizational approach contributes highly to matters of social inequality and increases the potential to understand the causes of economic deprivation and thereof propose a wider framework to address these highly relevant issues in today’s western societies. In the following years I intend to expand my publishing agenda and research activities in the area of (a) Philanthropy and (b) social enterprises. It is also my intention to advance and develop the introduction of an inter-disciplinary study program for graduate students in Philanthropy and Civil society. The potential of this program is now higher 18 RITA RIKOULA MANO january 2014 due to the High Education Council call for the funding and development of programs in conjunction with the Faculty of Humanities. 19
