Director’s Report 2012-2013
1. CCGSE/ CCÉDÉ Membership:
 I will be contacting Tim Howard after the conference to inquire about the number of
students in our membership.
 There were 365 graduate student members during the 2011-2012 academic year.
2. CCGSE/ CCÉDÉ University Graduate Student Representatives:
 Following up on an initiative by Loir Friesen to increase membership participation in
CSSE/SCÉÉ, we once again recruited volunteer representatives from universities across
Canada to increase communication and work with faculty members at their universities to
develop PD session proposals aimed at supporting graduate students at CSSE.
 There was great response (although representation from French speaking universities
(except U of O) is notably absent). This year’s representatives are:

4. CSSE Board of Directors Meeting
 I attended the CSSE Board of Directors meeting in Toronto in November 2012. There
were two days of meetings in which all issues related to CSSE were discussed. Of
particular interest to our membership is the fact that we were able to retain the funding
for graduate student travel.
5. CCGSE/ CCÉDÉ Job Fair:
 I contacted Victor Glickman (UBC) about this initiative that was launched at the
CSSE/SCÉÉ 2012 conference, and he directed me to Alison Faulknor who is involved in
organizing a Career Corner program. We attempted to join forces for a collaboration to
get our membership involved, but it didn’t work out. I propose that we pursue this avenue
next year.
6. Website Translation:
 Presently, our website is mainly in English. We are discussing the possibility of
hiring/recruiting someone to assist us with translating the website to ensure that all the
content is equally available in French
7. Communication

I make all attempts to provide communications in both French and English, but as many
of you will have noticed, my recent emails (in the past week leading up to the
conference) have all been in English. Part of the reason if the time that it takes to translate
the emails. It’s not fair to Marie-France to be continually put on the spot for translations,
and I certainly cannot make any last minute requests. I’d like some suggestions for
facilitating communication in both languages. Any/all advice welcome.
8. Elections

We conducted our elections this past April and May to replace three positions which have
reached the end of their terms. We were able to fulfill two of the positions, but one
remains empty. I’m pleased to announce the new members of our executive:
o Anne Rovers (OISE/U of T): Francophone Student Liaison
o Alaina Roach O’Keefe (UPEI): Treasurer/AGM Secretary
o Open: Listserv and Website Moderator

9. AERA GSC and CCGSE/ CCÉDÉ Collaboration (?!)
 I approached members of the GSC in June 2012 to inquire about continuing our
collaboration through co-hosted sessions at AERA. I did not get any response to my
inquiries.
 More recently, I approached the AERA GSC president again to see if they would be
interested in collaborating on a professional development session at the 2013
CSSE/SCÉÉ. I am awaiting a response
 Does anyone have any relationships with AERA committees that we can foster?
10. Ideas for future directions
 Featuring a ‘student’ of the month. We would feature a different graduate student
(random selection based on applications), and highlight their name/institution, and brief
synopsis of their research and work. Ideally, it would be great to have several student
researchers highlighted every month from across the country.
 Collaborations with other student organizations (like AERA). If you have any
suggestions, please email me.
My work this year has been a large learning curve, but I received much support from Lori and
Danielle, the past co-presidents, as well Julieta, and all of the members of the executive, student
representatives, Tim Howard, Victor Glickman, and many other people along the way!
