NEW IBERIA MAYOR HILDA DAIGRE CURRY IS THE NEW LOUISIANA MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT; LMA OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS INSTALLED AT 75TH ANNUAL CONVENTION LAKE CHARLES – Hilda Daigre Curry, Mayor of New Iberia was installed as president of the Louisiana Municipal Association on Saturday, August 4, at the conclusion of the LMA’s 75th annual convention at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Mayor Curry succeeds Glenn L. Brasseaux, mayor of Carencro, as LMA’s highest ranking officer. As LMA president, Mayor Curry will serve as the state’s leading advocate for villages, towns, and cities during 2012-2013. As LMA president, she will lead the LMA Executive Board and chair the LMA Executive Committee. In public service for some 35 years, including 27 years in the education system (16 of those in administration), Mayor Curry served five years on the New Iberia Board of Trustees and is in her second term as Mayor. At LMA, she has served two terms as vice president at large, second vice president in 2010-2011, and first vice president in 2011-2012. In becoming LMA president, Mayor Curry continues a family tradition. Her father, J. Allen Daigre, mayor of New Iberia in 1964-1988, was LMA president in 1975-1976. Her grandfather, Joe Daigre, was also Mayor of the city in 1929-1940 in the early formative years of the Association. Also installed Saturday night were Vern A. Breland, Mayor of Sterlington, LMA first vice president, and David J. Camardelle, Mayor of Grand Isle, LMA second vice president. Last year, Mayor Breland served as LMA second vice president and Mayor Camardelle previously served five consecutive terms as LMA district vice president. In addition, nine of the 10 district vice presidents who will serve on LMA’s Executive Board in 2012-2013 were introduced. They are: District “A” – Mayor Carroll Breaux, Springhill (for a fifth consecutive term) District “B” – Mayor Eugene Smith, Arcadia (for a ninth consecutive term) District “C” – Mayor Harry Lewis, Rayville (for a second consecutive term) District “D” – Mayor Clarence Beebe, Hornbeck District “E” – Alderman Kevin Dorn, Pineville (for a third consecutive term) District “F” – Mayor Kathy Richard, Arnaudville (for a third consecutive term) District “G” – Mayor Lawrence Henagan, DeQuincy (for a fifth consecutive term) District “I” – Mayor Bobby R. Font, Walker (for his first full term) District “J” – Mayor Joey Bouziga, Golden Meadow “My colleagues on the LMA Executive Board are truly wonderful and dedicated public servants, and I look forward to working with them,” Mayor Curry said. “Together with Mayors Breland and Camardelle, we will work to promote the value of the Louisiana Municipal Association by encouraging its members to utilize the services developed and provided by the LMA,” Mayor Curry said. “The LMA, in this its 86th year of operation, will continue to address issues of concern to local governments through effective relationships and communication among its member municipalities and our state and federal partners, especially in the advancement of policies and legislation that benefit our villages, towns and cities,” Mayor Curry said. “We also seek to encourage unity and participation among the municipalities in order to accomplish the greater good for all Louisiana communities,” the new LMA president added. “I am deeply indebted to our immediate past president, Mayor Glenn Brasseaux of Carencro, for the tremendous leadership he provided to LMA this past year.” Mayor Curry added. Mayor Brasseaux, as LMA immediate past president will continue to serve on the LMA Executive Board. LMA’s 75th annual convention drew some 1,800 delegates, spouses, exhibitors, guests, and dignitaries. U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, U.S. Congressmen Charles Boustany, and Bill Cassidy, Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret, and Louisiana Environmental Quality Deputy Secretary Alexander Appeaning were among those headlining the state’s largest gathering of municipalities in Lake Charles. The LMA convention followed a “Cities Mean Business” theme to show how villages, towns, and cities serve as the engines that drive commerce, magnets for good living, and bridges to economic success. LED Secretary Stephen Moret praised the contributions of Louisiana municipalities to the state’s economic development effort and urged mayors and municipal leaders to participate in the agency’s continuing initiative, “Louisiana Development-Ready Communities,” a proven program that helps communities bolster local economic and community development strategic planning.
