NEW IBERIA MAYOR HILDA DAIGRE CURRY IS THE NEW LOUISIANA MUNICIPAL
ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT; LMA OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS INSTALLED AT
75TH ANNUAL CONVENTION
LAKE CHARLES – Hilda Daigre Curry, Mayor of New Iberia was installed as president of the
Louisiana Municipal Association on Saturday, August 4, at the conclusion of the LMA’s 75th
annual convention at the Lake Charles Civic Center.
Mayor Curry succeeds Glenn L. Brasseaux, mayor of Carencro, as LMA’s highest ranking
officer. As LMA president, Mayor Curry will serve as the state’s leading advocate for villages,
towns, and cities during 2012-2013. As LMA president, she will lead the LMA Executive Board
and chair the LMA Executive Committee.
In public service for some 35 years, including 27 years in the education system (16 of those in
administration), Mayor Curry served five years on the New Iberia Board of Trustees and is in
her second term as Mayor. At LMA, she has served two terms as vice president at large, second
vice president in 2010-2011, and first vice president in 2011-2012.
In becoming LMA president, Mayor Curry continues a family tradition. Her father, J. Allen
Daigre, mayor of New Iberia in 1964-1988, was LMA president in 1975-1976. Her grandfather,
Joe Daigre, was also Mayor of the city in 1929-1940 in the early formative years of the
Association.
Also installed Saturday night were Vern A. Breland, Mayor of Sterlington, LMA first vice
president, and David J. Camardelle, Mayor of Grand Isle, LMA second vice president. Last
year, Mayor Breland served as LMA second vice president and Mayor Camardelle previously
served five consecutive terms as LMA district vice president.
In addition, nine of the 10 district vice presidents who will serve on LMA’s Executive Board in
2012-2013 were introduced. They are:
 District “A” – Mayor Carroll Breaux, Springhill (for a fifth consecutive term)
 District “B” – Mayor Eugene Smith, Arcadia (for a ninth consecutive term)
 District “C” – Mayor Harry Lewis, Rayville (for a second consecutive term)
 District “D” – Mayor Clarence Beebe, Hornbeck
 District “E” – Alderman Kevin Dorn, Pineville (for a third consecutive term)
 District “F” – Mayor Kathy Richard, Arnaudville (for a third consecutive term)
 District “G” – Mayor Lawrence Henagan, DeQuincy (for a fifth consecutive term)
 District “I” – Mayor Bobby R. Font, Walker (for his first full term)
 District “J” – Mayor Joey Bouziga, Golden Meadow
“My colleagues on the LMA Executive Board are truly wonderful and dedicated public servants,
and I look forward to working with them,” Mayor Curry said. “Together with Mayors Breland
and Camardelle, we will work to promote the value of the Louisiana Municipal Association by
encouraging its members to utilize the services developed and provided by the LMA,” Mayor
Curry said. “The LMA, in this its 86th year of operation, will continue to address issues of
concern to local governments through effective relationships and communication among its
member municipalities and our state and federal partners, especially in the advancement of
policies and legislation that benefit our villages, towns and cities,” Mayor Curry said.
“We also seek to encourage unity and participation among the municipalities in order to
accomplish the greater good for all Louisiana communities,” the new LMA president added.
“I am deeply indebted to our immediate past president, Mayor Glenn Brasseaux of Carencro, for
the tremendous leadership he provided to LMA this past year.” Mayor Curry added. Mayor
Brasseaux, as LMA immediate past president will continue to serve on the LMA Executive
Board.
LMA’s 75th annual convention drew some 1,800 delegates, spouses, exhibitors, guests, and
dignitaries. U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, U.S. Congressmen Charles Boustany, and Bill Cassidy,
Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret,
and Louisiana Environmental Quality Deputy Secretary Alexander Appeaning were among those
headlining the state’s largest gathering of municipalities in Lake Charles.
The LMA convention followed a “Cities Mean Business” theme to show how villages, towns,
and cities serve as the engines that drive commerce, magnets for good living, and bridges to
economic success. LED Secretary Stephen Moret praised the contributions of Louisiana
municipalities to the state’s economic development effort and urged mayors and municipal
leaders to participate in the agency’s continuing initiative, “Louisiana Development-Ready
Communities,” a proven program that helps communities bolster local economic and community
development strategic planning.
