BELLRINGER # 2:
Identifying Sentences vs. Fragments
A sentence is a collection of words that forms a complete thought. In order for a sentence to be truly a sentence or
complete, it must have three things:
1. _________________________________________________________________________________________
2. _________________________________________________________________________________________
3. _________________________________________________________________________________________
EXAMPLE: My sister plays the violin every day after school.
PRACTICE #1: Read the following sentences and identify these parts.
1. Antarctica has the highest elevation of the seven continents.
2. People on Antarctica study many things.
3. One type of bird found on Antarctica is the penguin.
4. The continent is far away from pollution.
5. Even though Antarctica is covered in ice and snow, it can be considered a desert.
A fragment is an incomplete sentence. It is incomplete because it is missing one of the three parts of a sentence, either
a subject, verb, or complete thought.
EXAMPLE: ______ Spends time together walking through the garden.
______ Before she went home.
______ The people swimming in the pool on Saturday.
PRACTICE #2: The following are all fragments. Identify if the fragment is a fragment because it is missing a subject (S),
verb (V), or complete thought (CT)
1. ______ No native people on Antarctica.
2. ______ Because it is too cold.
3. ______ Although scientists and other workers live in Antarctica for about a year at a time.

11. ______ A mountain range across the continent.

Now that you have practiced what is needed for a sentence to be complete, let’s practice identifying sentences vs.
