What are you doing for Lent, this year? This is the first
Sunday of Lent, so in journeying with the whole church, we want to ask ourselves what it is that we will try to do in order to keep this season holy particularly in the areas of prayer, fasting and giving alms (works of charity). It is good to remember that the bottom line or the ultimate goal of any Lenten practice is conversion – to know the Lord Jesus Christ more deeply and intimately; to grow in relationship with the
Lord Jesus Christ.
If this is not only our starting point but if it is to be the center of what we are to be doing for and during the
Lenten season and if it is truly to be the center of not just our Lenten walk and journey with the Lord but our walk for life in this world and the next one, then whatever practices we engage in should come naturally and somewhat easy for us. Whatever prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we decide upon should help us know the Lord better and deepen our relationship with him and all of God’s people. Knowing the love of God will change us to be better Christians and believers, servants and followers. Knowing the love of God will invite us to growth and help us to reach a mature stature of faith. So what prayer, what fasting and what almsgiving will lead us to and help us to express a deeper knowledge, love and commitment to the Lord
Jesus Christ? What prayer, fasting and almsgiving will show that we are about conversion – becoming less and less about ourselves and more and more about our Lord Jesus Christ? Whatever answers we come up with then this is what we should be doing for Lent this year.
Our parishes and pastoral region are offering many opportunities for prayer, fasting and almsgiving for all of us to partake together and for us to convert as church to the Lord’s loving presence more deeply and
fully. I pray that these opportunities will help your personal growth in the Lord Jesus as much as they will help our communal growth in the Lord Jesus Christ. In addition to these opportunities, you may want to do more personal practices or particular practices with your family. Again, the goal is growth in the Lord
Jesus Christ, getting to know the Lord better and change to be more like him. We need this growth personally, communally and in our families. So whatever prayer, fasting and almsgiving can bring this about, then this is truly what we all want to be doing for
Lent this year.
Last week, we suggested imagining placing a stethoscope over our hearts and listening to see where our hearts are not beating in sync with the Gospel of
Jesus. With this awareness when we received ashes this past Wednesday and heard the words, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” our Lenten conversion process began and our desire to know the
Lord better increased. Even if some of us were unable to be part of the Ash Wednesday service, we can still imagine placing the stethoscope over our hearts and ask the Lord to show us where we can turn away from sin and be more faithful to him. Also, since Lent is a time for all of us to prepare to renew our baptismal promises at Easter, then I suggest that we may want to make special efforts to go to the baptistry in our churches when coming to church for mass or any activity, dip and make the sign of the cross and say the words from Ash Wednesday to yourself : “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” With this awareness we will know that our conversion process from the moment we were born again in Baptism began and our desire to know the Lord better increases.
For this week, why not come out and ask the Lord directly in our prayer: Lord you know me. How can I get to know you as well as you know me? What prayer, fasting and almsgiving do you want me to engage in so that my knowledge of your love and my commitment to you will increase? Maybe Psalm 139 or some part of it may assist us in our reflection.
However God answers this prayer, this is what we should be doing for Lent. Happy Lent, everyone!

REFLECTIONS FROM THE JOURNEY FOR
THE JOURNEY
Presentation by Father Jim Schutte and Father Jim
Daprile who made the medieval pilgrimage from St.
Jean Pie dePort, France to Santiago de Compostela,
Spain, taking 35 days and over 500 miles in the Fall of
2009. These two pilgrims will share their camino experiences of walking the pilgrimage route of St.
James in words, prayers, reflections and images. They will also link their journey to our contemporary Lenten journey. Walking the El Camino de Santiago is truly symbolic for the fact that we are all pilgrims on a spiritual journey through this world to the eternal kingdom of God and it is a journey of dying and rising in our daily lives. Wednesday, March 10th, at St. Leo
Church, 2573 St. Leo Place at Baltimore, 513-921-
1044, 6:00pm Pot-Luck Crock-Pot Dinner followed by
7:00pm presentation .
