Cultural expressions within Chicano/a populations of the U.S. Indigenous aspects of Mexican culture and
tradition. Cultural characteristics as manifested in traditions, customs, social character, artistic and creative
expression and language. 3 Cr. S.

Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts
Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of
thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning.
Chicano/a representations and contributions to society vary considerably from population to population.
With an increased interest in Chicano/a intellectual and cultural expressions, this course examines how
Chicanos/as represent themselves and the meanings embedded in those representations. Indigenous arts,
philosophies and popular cultural expressions are explored.
13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 6, it must address at least 5 of the 7 student learning
outcomes (SLOs) below. Check the SLOs below that are focused on in the proposed general education course.
1. Demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities.

SOL1 is addressed by students' exposure to a variety of Chicano/a arts such as theatre and films.
SOL 2 is addressed by students' choice to pursue in-depth a particular artistic or intellectual expression and
present their choice to the class --contextualized historically and socially.
SOL 4 is addressed when readings on intellectual contributions are discussed and students choose to follow a line
of intellectual thought to expand on its broader meaning for contemporary works.
SOL 6 is addressed when students discuss--both orally and by writing a paper--the cultural expressions they
study.
SOL 7 is addressed when students discuss--both orally and by writing a paper--the messages communicated in the
artworks studied.
