Pre-Work - Teacher creates 10-30 sentences in English and translates into target language. (I try to have 2 or 3 students per sentence. For this example I just pulled phrases from an upcoming exam to use as my translations) - Create a clue word or phrase that has the same number of translations. (Above I had 6 sentences and used the phrase “BONITO” - Enter them into the boxes (like I did above). Make sure to write the 1st English sentence on the first slip of paper on the right column. Then write the Spanish translation on the following slip of paper in the left column. Follow it with one letter from the clue word in the center. The English sentence on the right is for the next translation. - Cut the slips apart and hang them around the room randomly. During Class Step 1: Students create a note sheet with two columns like this English Sentence, Spanish Translation and Clue Letter. Step 2: Students spread out around the room standing in front of a different slip of paper (see examples above). Step 3: Students copy down the English sentence from the right slip of paper on their individual slip of paper in the left column of their sheet. (This student started at “Billiards is not a game with cards”) Step 4: Think of the translation and write down your guess to the right. (This student wrote: “El billar no es un partido con los naipes”) Step 5: Student searches around the room to find that Spanish translation. Once it is found, check your answer and make corrections. (This student changed “partido” to “juego”) Step 6: Copy down the Clue Letter that follows the Spanish translation. Step 7: Copy down the next English sentence to repeat steps 3-6. Step 8: Once you get back to the original translation, look at the letters you gathered and figure out the secret word. The word should be in order but the starting letter will be different for everyone. (This student started with the Clue Letter “O”. Next the student would find N-I-T-O-B. After thinking about the order, they should come up with the phrase “BONITO”) To Finish: I have students come to me once they solve the phrase and I give them a stamp, high five or the coveted “First”, “Second” etc. Using their corrected translations, they now have a review sheet using key phrases from tomorrow’s exam.
