Homework: Read Handbook Chapters 1-2, pp. 521-544, in Bridges to
Better Writing (Bridges). Be prepared for a quiz.
August 14
Discuss the grammar homework. Take a grammar quiz. Read and discuss
the first assigned essay from Open Questions (p. 333+). Follow the
“Notes Regarding Journals” on your syllabus and write the first journal
entry. Finish this at home.
Homework: Read Handbook Chapters 3-4, pp. 545-574, in Bridges.
Be prepared for a quiz.
August 18
Discuss the grammar homework. Take a grammar quiz. Check the
journal.
Discuss Chapters 1-3, pp. 2-77, in Bridges. Brainstorm for the Descriptive
Narrative Essay, which can be used for a scholarship essay.
Homework: Read Handbook Chapters 5-6, pp. 575-614, in Bridges.
Be prepared for a quiz.
August 20
Discuss the grammar homework.
Write the rough outline for this essay; see pp. 67-69 and complete 3-5 and
3-6 (on your notebook paper). The teacher will initial the completed
rough outline.
Homework: Read Handbook Chapters 7-9, pp. 617-664, in Bridges.
Review Chapters 5-9 in the Handbook for a quiz.
August 22
Discuss the grammar homework. Take a grammar quiz on Chapters 5-9.
Read and discuss Anne Lamott’s essay on pages 159-161 in Bridges.
After the teacher approves the outline, write the rough draft of the
Descriptive Narrative Essay. REMEMBER TO LEAVE THE
APPROVED OUTLINE AND THE ROUGH DRAFT IN YOUR
WRITING FOLDER.

August 26
Finish writing the rough draft.
August 28
Revise the Descriptive Narrative Essay (pp. 73-75 in Bridges); peer edit
the Descriptive Narrative Essay.
