Unit Competencies As Do Now’s
* What students need to be able to do (skills)
1. Describe the events that occur during the cell cycle.
6. Compare and contrast the processes and outcomes of mitotic and meiotic nuclear divisions.
7. Describe processes that can alter composition or number of chromosomes (chromosomal
mutations).

Every reading assignment is expected to be completed BEFORE you come to class. Confused about the
reading? Prepare questions to ask in class AS YOU READ.
Be a Scout and Be Prepared…Reading quizzes may be given at ANY time.
Homework is due ON THE DUE DATE (Sectionals—Turn in on the due date…Field trips and
illnesses—turn in on your first day back.).
Do Now’s are to be completed in class and turned in THAT BLOCK. (Absent??—Turn in first day
back. Questions on the reading that goes with the Do Now??—Turn in written question specifying
what you don’t understand. Be specific. Don’t say, “I don’t get it”.)
Vocabulary understanding is necessary. Attend to the words at the beginning of each chapter, or words
that you encounter that are new to you.
6. **In order for you to participate in structured activities and labs, you must have
your Guided Reading up-to-date as well as your vocabulary.

Cell Growth and Reproduction—Vocabulary
Title the middle column, ‘Mitosis’ and the right column ‘Meiosis’. Put an ‘X’ in
the appropriate column(s) for all words that describe each.
Choose ten words from Mitosis and ten words from Meiosis.
Use plain paper to make four blocks each, a total of five pieces of paper.
Write the word VERY LARGE in highlighter/magic marker on one side, and the
definition in smaller pencil print on the back.
Words will be used to play ‘hopscotch’.

*FOR ALL GUIDED READING: REPHRASE THE QUESTION IN YOUR ANSWER.
WRITE USING COMPLETE SENTENCES. USE PUNCTUATION UNLESS
OTHERWISE DIRECTED!
8.1 Chromosomes: Chromosome Structure and Chromosome Number
Directions: Do A or B. Mark an ‘X’ on the line at A or B to show your choice.
___________A. Compare and Contrast It: Make a 3-column (Haploid/Both/Diploid)
chart comparing and contrasting Haploid and Diploid cell reproduction.
___________B. Make an outline: for your reading (you don’t need sentences in an
outline). Use the following skeleton set-up for it. 1. Chromosome Structure, 2.
Chromosome Numbers, 2a. Sex Chromosomes and Autosomes, 2b. Diploid and
Haploid Cells.

8.2 The Cell Cycle
Do the following:
A. Directions: Divide your paper into a ‘T’. At the top, title it, “Cell Cycle”. On the left,
write ‘The Eukaryotic Cell Cycle’ and copy 8.5. On the right, write ‘Control of the Cell
Cycle’ and copy 8.10. Tell what is happening in each.
At the bottom, make a block the whole way across the paper. Title it with the
heading: Prokaryotic Binary Fission. Write a 3-sentence summary of prokaryotic
binary fission.

8.2 Cell Division in Eukaryotes (beginning p. 154-Interphase plus Mitosis, and
Cytokinesis)
Directions: Do A or B Mark an ‘X’ on the line at A or B to show your choice.
________A. Makin’ Models—Make a model for each of the concepts (interphase plus
stages 1-4, cytokinesis). Remember a title and labels.
________B. Make It a Match!!—Make a matching ‘quiz’ for each of the concepts.
Use the following words:
Mitosis
gamete
interphase
Cytokinesis
prophase
spindle fiber
Metaphase
anaphase
telophase
Cell plate
cleavage furrow

8.3 Meiosis
Directions: Do A or B. Mark an ‘X’ on the line at A or B to show your choice.
___________A. Makin’ Lists: Title your answer—Meiosis. Explain the difference
between n (or 1n), and 2n. Include what their structure is, and what each of them
are going to make. Then, number 1through 8 on the left-hand side (leave a twofinger margin) of the paper. Write the phases by each number. LIST what happens.
Be sure to include crossing-over, synapsis, tetrad (from Fig 8.12) and define
them.
___________B. Color Me Meiosis Copy Fig 8.11, using colored pencils (get them from
your teacher if you need them). Don’t forget the explanation for the steps 1-8!

explanation.

Sexual Life Cycles in Eukaryotes AND Altenration of Generations
Directions: Do A or B. Mark an ‘X’ on the line at A or B to show your choice.
___________A. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?? Describe how organisms (give examples)
may have both haploid and diploid cells. Include content from the ‘Exploring
Further: Cloning by Parthenogenesis.
___________B. Copy Cat Cloning. Copy Fig. 6, Fig. 7, and Fig. 8. Use stick figure heads.
For each haploid/diploid model, include a cell with the appropriate contents for an
organism with one chromosome. Include a ‘disclaimer’ statement and indicate
which (n, or 2n) this is an example of.
