Praise the Lord.
I will worship the Lord with all my heart for his
works are so very great!
Praise the Lord.
His actions are glorious and his righteousness
endures forever.
Praise the Lord.
We always remember his works and his
incredible grace and compassion.
Praise the Lord.
He is our provider and his promises never fail.
Praise the Lord.
His works are powerful. He is faithful and just
and trustworthy.
Praise the Lord.
He has redeemed us and called us his people –
holy and awesome is his name.
Praise the Lord.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good
understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Praise the Lord.

* Prayer of Confession
No. 67
Lay Reader
Pride, dishonesty, selfishness, worry, unkindness – this only
begins to name the sin we struggle with day after day. We
confess our sin to you, O God. For we know that your
forgiveness and grace are unending. We are so thankful.
Remove these things and replace them with humility, honesty,
selflessness, trust and kindness. Continue to change us and
make us more like your son. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

* Doxology
“In the Bleak Midwinter”
What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give him: give my heart. Amen.
No. 221v4
* Prayer of Dedication
O God, having the same mind among us as we have in Christ Jesus,
bless this offering of our lives that we may humbly serve others as
Christ has ministered to us, compassionately reconcile as we have

to us. Empty us that we may be filled with your generous spirit.
Amen.

Sermon: “Freedom”
What is freedom? The apostle Paul says that he is free, but then says he’s under
obligation. What does that mean? Does God give us freedom or obligation?

Stop Hunger Now
Team Vale! Thanks for the tremendous support put forth last
Sunday! The Stop Hunger Now event was a great success with
dozens of people from across the community coming together
to participate in making a difference for thousands of people in
the world. We packaged 60,000 meals in under seven hours
with well over 300 volunteers. In several weeks we should
find out where the meals will go. We will let you know then. Thanks again for the
huge outpouring of support from across the congregation. You have made an
impact to save lives!
The Closet –
The new quarterly schedule for The Closet is posted on the Mission board.
Our days are February 10 (Tues), February 28 (Sat), March 10 (Tues), March 28
(Sat) and April 16 (Thurs). The times are from 9:45 am until 2:00 pm and can be
done in 2 hour shifts or all 4 hours. The manager also signs forms for teens needing
community service hours. Please consider signing up.
This quarter the following donations are being made: $1,980 toward
scholarships, $7,000 toward congregational benevolence (each helping church
receives a check at the end of the year to put toward their benevolence fund. This
includes Vale & is usually $500), $6,000 for FISH, $3,000 for Just Neighbors,
$2,000 for N. VA Literacy Council and $1,700 for Helping Hungry kids. In 2014,
The Closet donated $49,850 to local charities.
A beautiful letter was received by the store from a customer expressing her
appreciation for what The Closet has meant to her. It will be posted by the
schedule. I urge everyone to take a minute to read it as it explains just what the
non-profit store does for people in our community.
Questions: Call Chris Olson 703-476-4561 or Betty Chapas 703-620-9232.
VALENTINE DINNER & MUSIC on Friday, February 13 from 3-5 pm at
the Vienna Community Center, $10 per person includes lasagna dinner catered by
Marco Polo and live entertainment by Tallwood Trio. Contact Ed Lowry
(edlowry@verizon.net or 703-620-6633/Maurine Bohnslav 703-860-1067) by
January 30. This is sponsored by the Shepherds Center and Vienna Parks and
Recreation.
The Hypothermia Prevention Shelters are open for the winter to feed and
shelter our homeless neighbors. For the first time, Vale will be hosting nine
homeless guests the week of February 15th. There are many ways in which you can
help: providing homemade snacks, welcoming the guests, donating toiletries and
socks, making sandwiches for lunch, etc.
Vale will also again be supporting the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fairfax
(UUCF) the week of February 22nd. Volunteers will be needed to cook and serve
dinner, help in the dining room, provide fellowship in the evening, keep vigil
throughout the night, and pick up/drop off guests at the Metro.
Please sign up to volunteer for either--or both--shelters on the bulletin board in the
downstairs hallway or on the valechurch.org website. For more information,
contact Linda Potts at ljpo@aol.com or 703-620-9293.
Bible Sunday - Our tradition at Vale church is for all third graders to receive a
Bible from the congregation. The Bibles will be presented on February 8. If you
have a third grader (or an older child who has not yet received a Bible) please
provide us with their name as you wish it to appear in their Bible. We will need this
information as soon as possible so the bookplates can be prepared. If you have any
questions, please contact Ruth Anne Luckenbaugh at 703-400-1577 or
valeumcpreschool@gmail.com.
Alternative House Teen Shelter – A new 2015 sign-up sheet is posted on
the Missions bulletin board. Please sign up if you are willing to provide a meal for
6 – 12 people on the 4th Tuesday of any month. Please contact Jan Feeney at 703383-1353 if you have any questions.
Vale UMC Preschool is now taking registrations for the 2015-16 school year.
We are very blessed to have highly qualified teachers with many years of classroom
experience on our staff. Our very low teacher student ratio and small maximum
student registration makes our school quite unique. We have Chapel with the
Pastor, Movement and Music classes twice each month. A visit prior to registration
is recommended for all prospective families. For more information about our
church’s preschool offerings, please contact Ruth Anne Luckenbaugh at
valeumcpreschool@gmail.com or 703-400-1577.
Confirmation 2015 -- The United Methodist Church believes that
all people are engaged in a life-long faith journey. Confirmation
class is an opportunity for youth to explore the meaning of
discipleship and commitment. It is a call to a life of growth within
the church. All youth in 6th grade through high school who have
not yet been confirmed are encouraged to take part in this class, led
by the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Haugh and Alex Woody. The class will
meet approximately 12 times and will also involve field trips and a
retreat. First class will begin on February 1st from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in the
Fellowship Hall. Please RSVP to the church office if you plan for your child to
attend.
New Altar Flower Sign Up Sheet –The 2015 Altar Flower signup sheet has
been posted on the main bulletin board in the hallway. Please sign up if you are
looking to remember a loved one in a special way. If you have any questions please
call the church office at 703-620-2594.
Church Keys – If you have a key to the church and you no longer need it, please
place the key in a sealed envelope and return it to the church office. Also, please
write your name on the envelope so we can update our records, noting that you
returned it.
"Tables of Eight" Organizing for Winter/Spring (Feb-May)
Tables of Eight" is a wonderful opportunity to get to know others in the
congregation and enjoy food, fellowship and fun in a relaxed social setting.
Both singles and couples are encouraged to join.
Participants will be divided into groups of eight—and each group will meet
monthly for dinner over four months, starting in February. Hosting and food
assignments will rotate each month within the group
If you are interested in a group that goes out to restaurants and does not host
in homes, there is a group forming!
Please call Margie Lee at 703-391-5097 or email her at
margielee410@gmail.com if you are interested in participating or have
