Mike Florio, PFT: The deal includes $18.25 million in guaranteed money, and he will earn $27
million over the first three years of the deal.
Murphy: The Bills new deal with wide receiver Lee Evans is very much a front-loaded contract,
but the average salary is not as much as was reported last week. When the deal was first
announced last Thursday, some reports said Evans would make an average salary of more than
$9-million under the new deal.
As Paul Peck points out in his post below, the deal is for a total of five seasons, including the
current 2008 campaign. From league sources, here's what we believe the actual salary figures
are for Evans:
2008 season total $11.7 million; guaranteed (a $9.45-million raise over the
salary he was scheduled to receieve)
2009 season total $9 million (guaranteed, no bonuses)
2010 season total $5.4 million; plus a $3 million roster bonus
2011 season total $3 million; plus a $1 million roster bonus
2012 season total $3 million; plus a $1 million roster bonus
Sportsline.com: According to the NFL Players Association, Evans will earn at least $29 million
over the deal's first three years, making it a very attractive "front loaded" contract. His base
salaries for 2008, 2009 and 2010 are $11.73 million, $9 million and $5.4 million, respectively. A
$3 million roster bonus is attached in 2010.

Adam Caplan, Fox Sports: Fitzpatrick signed a three-year, $8.25 million deal with Buffalo in
March of 2009 which included roughly $3 million guaranteed. His $1.82 million base salary for
2009 was guaranteed. The rest of the guaranteed money came in the form of a $1.17 million
signing bonus.
Andrew Brandt, NFP: He will now receive a $10 million signing bonus on top of that. And in
March, Fitzpatrick will receive a $5 million option bonus… What was important to Fitzpatrick and
agent Jimmy Sexton was a three-year APY of $11 million. They were able to achieve that, with
$33 million due between now and 2014. In exchange for the three year APY, they were willing
give the Bills some less onerous numbers in the later years of the deal, with a total deal of $59
million over six years. Another goal for the Fitzpatrick camp was to achieve a guarantee of $24
million, which they were successful in doing. In exchange for that, the Bills did not provide any
skill guarantees – meaning no money is guaranteed even if Fitzpatrick is not good enough to be
on the roster. Beyond the $15 million of signing and option bonuses, the additional $9 million
guaranteed are for injury-only guarantees.
Mike Florio, PFT: the Bills could trade or cut Fitzpatrick before the seventh day of the 2012
league year and owe him nothing further than the $3.22 million base salary he was already due
to earn in 2011 and the $10 million signing bonus he was paid upon inking the new deal last
month. On the seventh day of the 2012 league year, the Bills owe Fitzpatrick a $5 million option
bonus. If they don’t exercise the option, Fitzpatrick’s base salary for 2012 would increase from
$2.8 million to $7.8 million, and it would be fully guaranteed for injury only. In 2013, Fitzpatrick
has a $3 million roster bonus, which also is guaranteed for injury only, along with a base salary
of $4.25 million, $3.2 million of which is guaranteed for injury only. In 2014, there’s another $3
million roster bonus (non-guaranteed) and a non-guaranteed base salary of $4.35 million. For
2015, 2016, and 2017 Fitzpatrick has non-guaranteed base salaries of $7.2 million, $8.75 million,
and $9.45 million, respectively.
Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: Fitzpatrick is due a $3 million roster bonus in March. If he gets cut
before that bonus is paid, then he will count $10 million against the Bills’ salary cap in 2013.
That's a lot, but not so much that he will have to be retained. If Fitzpatrick is on the roster, his
cap number for 2013 will be $10.45 million.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Florence signed a three-year, $15 million contract with

100 percent. Depending on when Johnson returns, that could result in as much as $800,000 in
additional earnings for Flutie, who turned 36 Friday. Johnson could miss as many as three more
games. Furthermore, if Flutie ends up playing 70 percent of the season, he will be in line to
receive bonus payments for individual honors, such as passer rating (based on a minimum of
224 attempts) and touchdown passes, as well as team achievements, such as points scored by
the offense, victories, playoffs, the conference championship, and the Super Bowl. If most or all

money Flutie receives this year will automatically be added to his $350,000 base salary in 1999.
And whatever bonuses he does not hit this season will be available to him next year.

Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: The Bills, however, upped the ante in retaining their rights to
Hansen, their starting left defensive end. If a three-year player is offered at least $649,000, it
would cost another team a first-round draft choice to sign him away.
Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: The extension is worth $8.7 million, including a signing bonus of $2.8
million, according to salary information obtained by The Buffalo News. But the deal also reduces
Hansen's 1996 cap figure from $2,133,000 to $1,333,300, freeing $800,000 to be spent
elsewhere… Hansen also agreed to have his '96 base salary reduced from $1.8 million to
$300,000. Counting $333,300 from the amortization of a signing bonus he received in 1994,
Hansen's new cap figure is $1,333,300. His base salary will increase to $1.2 million in 1997, $2
million in 1998 and $2.4 million in 1999.

Allen Wilson, Buffalo News: His base salaries over the four years are $500,000 this year, $1.195
million in 2010, $1.625 million in 2011 and $1.830 million in 2012. He received a signing bonus
of $1.1 million and is scheduled to get another $650,000 bonus for making the 53-man roster.
He is due a $250,000 reporting bonus in 2010 and gets workout bonuses of $50,000 each year of
the deal. With other incentives the total value of the extension is $7.5 million.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Jackson was set to earn $2.105 million in 2012 via a
$1.955 million base salary, $100,000 roster bonus (which came due in March) and a $50,000
workout bonus. With the extension, Jackson will now earn $5.405 million, including a $3 million
signing bonus, $2.205 million base salary, his already earned $100,000 roster bonus and a
workout bonus that was increased to $100,000. Jackson can earn $100,000 in incentives. The
only part of Jackson's contract extension that is guaranteed is the $3 million signing bonus.
In 2013, Jackson has a $300,000 roster bonus due on the 5th day of the league year, a $2.15
million base salary, a $100,000 and has up to $150,000 in "per game active" roster bonuses.
Jackson's cap number next season is scheduled to be $3.7 million. 2014, the second and final
year of Jackson's extension, calls for a $2.45 million base salary, a $100,000 workout bonus and
up to $150,000 in "per game active" roster bonuses for a cap number of $3.7 million. Jackson
can earn $1.1 million in incentives tied to rushing yards, receiving yards, rushing touchdowns,
playing time, Pro Bowls and playoffs in 2013-14
Field Yates: The Buffalo Bills recently signed one of their captains, running back Fred Jackson, to
a one-year extension through the 2015 season. While some of the details have previously been
covered in this space, below is a full breakdown of his deal: Base salary: $2.35 million Roster
bonus: Up to $150,000 ($9,375 for each game he is on the 46-man roster) Workout bonus:
$100,000
The above details had been documented, but below is a breakdown of how Jackson can earn up
to $1 million more in incentives. A. If Jackson rushes for 1,000 yards or more, he earns $150,000
OR if he surpasses 750 rushing yards and the team qualifies for the playoffs in 2015, he earns
$250,000 B. If Jackson improves over his 2014 rushing touchdowns total (a minimum of nine), he
earns $150,000 OR if he rushes for eight or more touchdowns and the team qualifies for the
playoffs in 2015, he earns $250,000 OR if he has seven or more receiving touchdowns he earns
$250,000 C. If Jackson plays 60 percent of the offensive plays, he earns $150,000 OR if he plays
57.5 percent of the offensive plays and the team qualifies for the playoffs in 2015, he earns
$250,000 D. If Jackson has 500 or more receiving yards, he earns $150,000 OR if he has 450
receiving yards or more and the team qualifies for the playoffs in 2015, he earns $250,000
E. If Jackson is named to the Pro Bowl (note: not as an alternate), he will earn $100,000.
Thus, Jackson can earn up to $3.7 million if he hits all of his incentives, which includes the team
making the playoffs. If the team does not reach the playoffs, the maximum payout for Jackson is
$3.3 million. Given his value to the club both on the field and from a leadership standpoint, this
is a case of a team making a wise investment in a critical veteran player. Note: Jackson has the
same performance-based incentives for 2014 (except for in Clause B. He simply must reach nine
rushing touchdowns; it is not tied to his 2013 rushing touchdowns total).

Jackson also receives $15,625 per game that he’s on the active roster, which amounts to an
additional $250,000, if he’s on the active roster for every regular-season game. Jackson also can

Mike Florio, PFT: he has received a base salary of $1.25 million and a roster bonus of $450,000.
The roster bonus gets paid out only if he’s on the roster for the first game. Jackson also has

Kevin Seifert, Minneapolis Star Tribune: Kelsay signed a four-year contract worth $2.745 million,
including a $1.375 million signing bonus.
Adam Schefter, NFL.com: the Buffalo Bills have signed defensive end Chris Kelsay to a four-year,
$23 million deal. The package includes roughly $13 million in guaranteed money.
Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: the signing Monday of defensive end Chris Kelsay will cost the
Bills $12 million in money this year - an $8 million signing bonus, a $1 million base salary and
another $3 million bonus he's likely to get this year…
Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: The value of Chris Kelsay’s new contract is $20 million over four
years, for an average of $5 million a year, according to figures obtained by The News. On top of
that, the deal includes incentives of $4 million - $1 million in each year of the deal, 2011 to 2014.
So the maximum value is $24 million. We don’t know how he would qualify for those incentives.
The presumption is they’re tied to playing time, and the bar is not extremely high to achieve
them. Kelsay essentially gets a $2.4 million signing bonus. That includes a $400,000 increase in
his base salary this year and a $2 million bonus paid out this week. (It’s counted as an option
bonus, not an amortized bonus, for students of the salary cap.) Kelsay gets a base salary of $2
million in 2011, which is guaranteed. He also gets a $2 million reporting bonus in 2011.
Bottom line: It’s a good deal for Kelsay, because he gets more financial security and more
money in his pocket right away. It’s not an exorbitant deal for the Bills. Theoretically - and that's
the operative term here - it really should not preclude the Bills from any future spending on
renegotiations or free-agent acquisitions. Kelsay’s base salaries are $3.5 million in 2012, $3.7
million in 2013 and $3.7 million in 2014. As with any standard player contract, those aren’t
guaranteed. He gets roster bonuses of $750,000 each of those three years.
Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: Kelsay is due to count $5.97 million against the cap, and the Bills
would save $4.9 million if he were released. Kelsay played 50 percent of the defensive snaps last
year before he was lost for the season to injury.

Brian McIntyre, Yahoo Sports: the quarterback is scheduled to earn $3 million in 2013. Kolb
received a $1 million signing bonus, which is the only portion of the contract that is guaranteed.
Kolb is scheduled to earn $1.65 million in base salary, a $250,000 roster bonus and has a
$100,000 workout bonus. Kolb's first-year cap hit is $2.5 million, slightly higher than the $2.25
million cap hit of Tarvaris Jackson, who will be competing with Kolb for the starting job. In 2014,
Kolb is scheduled to earn $2 million in base salary with a $1 million roster bonus and $100,000
workout bonus. Though Kolb can earn an escalator to his 2014 salary, the base value of his
contract with the Bills is $6.1 million.
Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: The base value of the contract Kevin Kolb signed with the Buffalo
Bills is $6 million over two seasons. Kolb's deal could be worth up to $13 million in total money,
but he will have to hit a lot of incentives to reach that amount. For practical purposes, Kolb's
deal is worth $3 million this year and $3 million next year, a league source reports. He gets a $1
million signing bonus and a base salary worth $1.65 million this season. He has a $250,000
roster bonus if he is on the 46-man roster for the season opener. He also has about $100,000 in
workout bonuses in this year's total. In 2014, the contract calls for a $1 million roster bonus and
a base salary of $2 million.
Mike Florio, PFT: a $1 million roster bonus hinges on Kolb being on the roster for the third day of
the 2014 league year, which starts in March. The deal also carries a whopping $6.5 million in
incentives and escalators. Each year, Kolb can earn another $2 million based on playing time.
He has can earn up to $850,000 per year based on both passing production and playing time,
$150,000 per year for making it to the Pro Bowl. Finally, the deal contains a $500,000 escalator
in 2014 tied to the incentives he unlocks in 2013. That adds up to a maximum deal of $12.6
million…

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: 5-years, $24.6M: $14.24M guaranteed
Mike Florio, PFT: The Bills have signed Maybin. Per a league source, the base value of the deal is
$17.6 million over five years.
Aaron Wilson, NFP: Maybin signed a five-year deal worth a maximum value of around $25
million, according to a league source.
Mike Florio, PFT: only $2.3 million of Maybin's incentives and escalators objectively could be
characterized as difficult to achieve, requiring multiple Pro Bowl appearances and specific sack
totals. Another $2.75 million is tied to a playing-time formula ranging from 60 percent to 70
percent of the defensive snaps, and $1.9 million hinges on a not-impossible formula of one Pro
Bowl appearance and 30 total sacks in three seasons.
Allen Wilson, Buffalo News: He received a $7.087 million bonus after signing his five-year deal in
2009.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Maybin signed a five-year, $17.6 million contract that
included $14.245 million in guarantees. $5,000 of his $757,500 in 2011 remains guaranteed. A
team claiming the 23-year-old's contract will assume his current base salary, as well as $2.6
million in non-guaranteed base salary in 2012 and 2013. Up to $7 million in base salary
escalation remains in those seasons.

as much as $15.528 million. In bonus money, he will receive $4.15 million. That includes an
initial $1 million signing bonus, a guaranteed option bonus of $2.75 million due next March, and
a $400,000 roster bonus. The "base" contract, minus incentives, is worth $7.053 million… If the
Bills place McGahee on the non-football injury list, which is a consideration, they are technically
not obliged to pay the former University of Miami star his $411,000 salary for the 2003 season,
but they have agreed to do so.

Allen Wilson, Buffalo News: McGee received a four-year deal worth $27 million in new money.
Andrew Brandt, NFP: McGee signed a five-year deal -- four new years -- worth a total of $27M.
Since McGee was scheduled to make $3M this season and that amount is not changed with the
new deal, the “new money” in the deal is $24M, and APY of $6M. There’s $9M in guaranteed
dollars in the form of a $3M signing bonus and a $6M roster bonus in March 2010.
Aaron Wilson, Scout.com: McGee has restructured his contract, reducing his base salaries to
$1.35 million and $1.75 million over the next two years, according to a league source with
knowledge of the situation. The deal includes a $300,000 signing bonus. McGee was previously
slated for $3.6 million and $4.6 million base salaries over the next two years. His new reduced
salary-cap figures for 2012 and 2013 are $3.78 million and $4.35 million. McGee previously had
salary-cap figures of $6.3 million for 2012 and $7.2 million for 2013.
Brian McIntyre, NFL.com: McGee renegotiated his contract in March, reducing his $4.2 million in
total compensation to $1.95 million. According to a source with knowledge of McGee's contract,
he can earn $2.375 million in incentives tied to playing-time and making the Pro Bowl.
Brian McIntyre, Yahoo Sports: McGee took a pay cut last February to remain with the Bills and is
scheduled to earn $2.35 million in 2013, including a $250,000 roster bonus due on March 18.
McGee's release would save $2.35 million in cap space.

Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: The contract includes a $1.5 million signing bonus and $3 million

2010 season, the Bills get to amortize his $1.5 million bonus over three seasons - 2010, 2011 and
2012. That's a benefit to the Bills. He gets a base salary of $2.75 million in 2011. He gets a
reporting bonus of $500,000 and a workout bonus of $500,000 this year. Undoubtedly he's
going to get those two bonuses.
His base salary in 2012 is $4 million, $3 million of which is guaranteed "with exception for 2010
injury." We're not sure of the exact language of the contract on that exception. As long as he
hits the field in 2010, the presumption is he gets it. We originally reported that he was expected
to $2.5 million guaranteed. Merriman would get a $1 million roster bonus in March of 2012 and
a $250,000 workout bonus in 2012. The deal also includes $4 million in incentive bonuses in
2011 and 2012 that are tied to playing time and sack totals. As long as he recovers from his
Achilles tendon injury and is on the roster for the start of the 2011 season, he's going to get
$8.25 million from the Bills.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Moorman and the Bills have agreed to a new seven-year contract, a deal
that runs through the 2009 season, and will be worth at least $6 million to the two-year
veteran… Moorman, 27, will receive a signing bonus of $300,000, a roster bonus of $100,000
and a base salary of $600,000 for 2003. The $1.025 million in total compensation represents a
$650,000 increase over what Buffalo was compelled to pay Moorman in this third season.
Because he was an "exclusive rights" free agent, Moorman was precluded from soliciting offers
from other franchises, and the Bills essentially could have forced him to play for the third-year
minimum base salary of $375,000… The remaining annual base salaries: $600,000 (2004),
$650,000 (2005), $700,000 (2006), $750,000 (2007), $825,000 (2008) and $1.15 million (2009).
After the third season, the Bills must exercise an option to trigger the final four years of the
contract. That option payment is at least $300,000, and can be as high as $1 million, based on
the number of Pro Bowl berths Moorman earns.

Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News: The agreement is for three years and keeps Moulds under
contract through 2007. His old pact was to run out in 2006, but his salary cap numbers were
going to be costly in 2005 and exorbitant in 2006. The deal will give Moulds the same amount of
money he was due to make in 2005. It includes a $5 million bonus and a $1.5 million base salary.
Under the old deal he was going to get a $5.5 million base and a $1 million roster bonus.
Because the bonus gets spread out for the life of the contract, his cap cost is expected to drop
from $8.6 million to $5.16 million, a savings of $3.4 million to the Bills' player budget for 2005…
The three-year deal is believed to be for about $18 million.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: the Buffalo Bills have signed starting free safety Pierson Prioleau to a
three-year contract extension… worth $4.465 million in so-called "new money." Added to the
one-year deal under which Prioleau was already playing, the contract now binds the fourth-year
veteran to the Bills through the 2005 campaign. The total value of what now is a four-year
contract is $5.028 million. Prioleau, 25, received an $850,000 signing bonus. His base salary for
2002, originally scheduled to be $563,000 under the one-year qualifying offer he signed in April
as a restricted free agent, was reduced slightly to $550,000. The base salaries for the extension
seasons are $750,000 (2003), $1 million (2004) and $1.25 million (2005). He received a workout
bonus of $3,330 for this season. There is a reporting bonus of $200,000 in 2003, a workout
bonus of $200,000 for 2004 and also a roster bonus of $225,000 in 2005.

Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: Reed, who was scheduled to make $1.15 million this year, will now
get about $1.6 million. His salary then will drop to about $1.3 million next season, and remain at
$1.55 million in 1995, the final year of his agreement.
Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: Upset that his original 1999 salary was $ 1.3 million, Reed stayed
away from the Bills' mandatory minicamp in April and voluntary minicamp in June… Under the
new agreement, Reed will receive a signing bonus of $ 1.8 million, but his base salary has been
reduced from $ 1.3 million to the veteran minimum of $ 400,000. That gives Reed $ 2.2 million
in salary for this year. The one-year extension allows the Bills to amortize Reed's signing bonus
over three seasons, which comes to $ 600,000 per year. Counting his $ 400,000 base, Reed's
1999 salary-cap figure is $ 1 million, about $ 650,000 less than it was under his previous deal.
The new agreement will also pay Reed $ 1.775 million next year, rather than the $ 2.35 million
he was scheduled to earn, and $ 2.3 million in 2001.

Michael Janofsky, NY Time: signing bonuses ranged from the $1.67 million Bruce Smith, the first
player taken in the draft, got from the Buffalo Bills…
Will McDonough, Boston Globe: The Bills, under the NFL free agency system, have one week to
match the offer. If they do not, Smith will become the property of the Broncos, and Buffalo will
receive two first-round draft choices (1989 and '90) as compensation… Smith agreed to a
package calling for a $500,000 and salaries of $1.2 million, $1.3 million, $1.4 million, $1.5 million
and $1.6 million.
Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: Smith received $ 2.3 million for agreeing to a lower base salary this
year and to have an extra year added to his contract, which had two seasons remaining. Because
the $ 2.3 million is in the form of a signing bonus, only $ 766,667 of it counts toward the Bills'
salary cap each year for the next three seasons. By agreeing to have his 1995 base salary
reduced from $ 2.8 million to $ 1.6 million, Smith's cap salary -- including the $ 766,667 -will be $
2.4 million rather than its original $ 2.8 million. That gives the Bills an extra $ 400,000 and makes
Smith, who had complained about his salary during last April's minicamp, happier because he
will actually earn $ 3.9 million this year.
Thomas George, NY Times: Smith said he will earn $2.2 million this season [1996]… Smith has
two years remaining on a contract signed in 1992 worth $13.6 million… Last year, he said, Bills
management asked him to flip-flop the final two years of his contract (take $3.9 million last year
and $2.8 million this year and put $600,000 of that $2.8 million into incentives, and also add a
year).
Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: He signed a six-year extension worth $ 28.2 million, which averages $
4.7 million per season. His signing bonus was $ 6 million.

Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: A major factor was the Bills' willingness to give Burris more
guaranteed money up front and a larger total package than they gave last year's first-rounder,
cornerback Thomas Smith, also taken 27th overall. Smith's four-year, $2.6-million deal did not
include a signing bonus. It included $374,600 for reporting to camp on time and a rookie base
salary of $100,000.
Vic Carucci, Buffalo News: Smith, who had been a restricted free agent, today agreed to a fouryear deal that will pay him an average of $1.7 million per season, The Buffalo News has learned.
Smith was paid $830,600 last year, the final season of a contract he signed after the Bills made
him a first-round draft pick from the University of North Carolina in 1993.

Mike Florio, PFT: Already under contract through 2010, a league source tells us that Stroud has
agreed to terms on a contract that will pay him an average of $8.25 million per year for the two
new seasons. In all, Stroud is now under contract for four years at a total take of $28 million.
He’ll receive $12 million guaranteed, and $16 million in the first two years.
John Wawrow: Marcus Stroud's fresh start in Buffalo is paying off as the veteran defensive
tackle was rewarded with a two-year contract extension potentially worth $16.5 million.
Stroud's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his client has signed
an extension that includes $12 million in guaranteed money. Stroud, coming off his first season
in Buffalo after being acquired in a trade with Jacksonville, had two years left on his existing
contract and is signed through the 2012 season. The eight-year veteran and 2001 first-round
draft pick could earn up to $28 million over the next four years should he achieve all bonuses.
James McCoy: His new deal is worth $29 million over the next four years. A total of $12 million is
guaranteed, and he will make $16 million over the next two seasons.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Stroud was due to earn $10 million in base salary, along
with a pair of $1 million roster bonuses between 2011-12, prompting his release.

Jarrett Bell, USA Today: Thomas… signed a four-year contract worth $13.5 million Wednesday…
The Bills tore up the final year of Thomas' deal, replacing a payout of $1.45 million in '93 with a
$4 million salary. The deal - which averages $3.4 million - pays Thomas salaries of $2.8 million,
$2.8 million and $3.9 million in succeeding years.
AP: Thomas, who will be 30 in May, signed a three-year contract extension Monday that will
keep him in a Buffalo Bills' uniform at an age when most running back are retired. The contract,
which is more a renegotiation than a new deal, will pay Thomas, an Oklahoma State product, a
little more than $9 million this year and the following three years. It includes a $2.3 million
signing bonus. It also saves the Bills a little more than $2 million in salary cap money… It pays

guaranteed at the time of signing with an additional $14.5 million, that is guaranteed for injury

In 2014, when the new television contracts hit, Williams is due a $1.9 million base salary and a
$10.6 million roster bonus that is currently guaranteed for injury only. Williams also has a
