Class of 2016 – WHOOP!!!
Welcome to the Bush School! I look forward to meeting and working with each of you over the
next two years.
In the past I have been the point of contact for registration for all first-year students. That will
change this year. Each of you will be able to log onto the Howdy portal at howdy.tamu.edu with
your user name and id and register for fall courses yourself. Please note, however, there are
some guidelines that you need to follow depending on the track you are in, national security and
diplomacy (NS&D) or international development and economic policy (IDEP). Due to the larger
entering class sizes, each student is required to take all core courses, except the Capstone course,
during the first year. The guidelines are outlined below.
Registration Status
Once your admission file has been processed though the university system, you should be able to
register for your fall 2014 semester courses. If you are unable to register, it could be due to a
hold on your account, e.g. meningitis record missing, incomplete adm file (this means you may
not have turned in all of your official transcripts). Once you have turned in the necessary
materials you will be able to register.
1. Log onto Howdy howdy.tamu.edu
2. Click on the “My Record” tab
3. Use the links in the Registration Channel to view your registration status and to
register for classes.
International Students
If you are an international student you will not be cleared for registration until you have arrived
on campus and completed the check-in process with International Student Services (ISS). See
http://iss.tamu.edu/checkin_orientation/orientation_main.asp. However, you may email me your
preferred class schedule and I will work with you to hold a spot in those classes if possible.
5-year Joint Degree Students
If you have been admitted as a 5-year joint degree program, you will not be able to register
yourself due to your continued U4 status until I have placed registration overrides on your
account. Please email me your preferred schedule and I will place the overrides for those
specific sections so that you may register.
All Other Students
Core courses include the following:
INTA 601 Leadership – all NS&D students should take the leadership course in the fall 2014
semester, and IDEP students will take this course in the spring 2015 semester.
NOTE:
INTA 603 American Diplomacy and INTA 667 International Crisis Management can also
be counted as a Leadership course. Both NS&D and IDEP may take INTA 603 or INTA 667 to
count as the core leadership course. There will be limited slots available in the fall semester in
these two courses so once they are full INTA 601 Leadership will need to be taken.
INTA 606 International Politics in Theory in Practice – all students will enroll in this course,
offered in fall 2014 only
INTA 608 Global Economy – there will be 45 slots open in this course offered in fall 2014. If
you are not able to register for the course in the fall you will take it in the spring and an elective
can be taken in its place. There is a possibility that we will offer a second section in the fall 2014
semester, if that is the case then all NS&D students will be moved into the new section.
INTA 605 American Foreign Policy – this is a required course of NS&D students only. There
will be one section offered in the fall 2014 semester and two in the spring 2015 semester. If the
fall section fills you will need to take it in the spring and select an elective in its place.
BUSH 631 Quantitative Methods I – all IDEP students will take this course in the fall 2014
semester. NS&D students will take this course in the spring 2015 semester.
BUSH 635 Quantitative Methods II – this is a required course for IDEP students only and must
be taken in the spring 2015 semester.

Requesting to waive a core course
If you have previously completed a graduate course equivalent to one of the core courses
(EXCEPT Capstone) you can request to waive the core course. You will need to complete the
attached waiver request form and attach the syllabus of the course that you took. You must have
a grade of “B” or better for the request to be considered. If the request is granted then you will
select an elective to replace the core course. NOTE: you will not receive credit for the waived
course.
I will be out of the office from May 11 through June 1, returning June 2, but I will have email
access so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or difficulties with
registration.
Thank you.
