BC High Varsity Ultimate 2014 The 17 young men of the 2014 Varsity squad have represented the school well and continued the school’s entrance into a more serious and competitive realm. The Varsity squad went 6-11 in the regular season and finished 9-12 overall. The team played a 3-handler set with two mid-cutters and two deep-cutters. In the cold, dreary rain the boys worked to overcome the wind and worked their cores to get in game shape. Utterances of “chilly”, “get vertical,” “hard force,” and “swing the disc,” “no break,” and “nice bid” were “Ultimate-speak” engrained in the minds of the team. Contributions were made from Marcus Bockhorst at mid and deep, Dan Boudreau as handler/ratchet, Liam McKenna as handler/ratchet, Joe Donoso as a mid, Nate Guevin as a mid and deep, Pat Exconde as a mid, Chris Kelble as a handler/ratchet, Alex Maggioni as a deep, Wesley Mei as a deep, Matt Nescio as a mid, Danny Nguyen as a mid, Tighe O’Leary as a handler, Bobby Sullivan as a handler, Peter Vargo as a handler and Dimitri Cesar as team manager. Will Speciale and Luke Tonry were moved up to varsity from jv for the post-season as handlers/deeps. The team overcame 7 cancellations due to weather or a team not able to travel including games versus Scituate, Barrington, Xaverian, Woburn, Milton, Mansfield and Abington. The team was led by junior captain Alex Maggioni who was also named a Division II all-star (only the second in school history). Senior captain Dan Boudreau was named a sportsman of the month for BC High. Senior captain Peter Vargo achieved Eagles Scout Status during the season. The captains of this team began recruitment and training in the fall and led workouts up until the spring season. The varsity team was featured in its second ever article in the Patriot Ledger highlighting a game versus Abington in which Peter Vargo, Tighe O’Leary and Dan Boudreau were all featured along with Coach Conner. playing a tough schedule and trading wins and losses. The men embraced the Spirit of the Game even during losses; morale and heart never left this group of guys. Team manager, Dimitri Cesar, made sure of that in his pre-game and post-game talks. This was the team’s second year with varsity status after finishing 3rd in the state in Division II last year. The season proved a challenging building year for the team, but milestones were made. Some memorable firsts included the Eagles going toe to toe with Division I Sharon twice in the season even though the Eagles remained Division II. The team was also nationally ranked as #222 in the country. BC High Ultimate Varsity defeated Beverly, Abington, Franklin, Needham B and Rockport. The team entered the Division II state tournament as a 12 seed out of 24 teams. The team went 3-1 in the tournament defeating Newton North B, Northampton JV and Harvard Bromfield and only losing to 5 Seed Medway. The team broke seed and finished 9th out of 24 teams. The leading goal scorer for the team was junior captain Alex Maggioni with 59 goals. Leading the team with assists was junior Liam McKenna with 64. Leading the team with defensive plays was junior Wesley Mei with 43. The team suffered four concussions and hit both coach and a car with a disk. Remarkably, every single varsity team member had at least one assist, goal or defensive play during the season and post-season. The future looks bright for the Ultimate program as JV sends up a strong group of players. We say good bye to eight seniors this year who head to promising ultimate futures at Colby, Georgetown, Bennington, Loyola Maryland, Bucknell, Stonehill, the University of Rochester and Clarkson University. Special thanks to captains Dan Boudreau (Sr.), Pete Vargo (Sr.) and Alex Maggione (Jr.). There is no way the team would have been able to succeed as it did without these three committed, athletic, intelligent, respectful and organized young men. We also thank all of our alumni (most of whom still play ultimate in college ranging from Santa Clara University to Clemson to High Point and Loyola Chicago) for coming back to practice with the team as well as play in the annual alumni game. Every day was a great day for ultimate and the team will return next year even stronger and faster to compete against some of the best ultimate programs in the country. Awards for this season: MVP (Alex Maggioni), Rookie of the Year (Matt Nescio), Most Helpful Off the Field (Dan Boudreau and Bobby Sullivan), Team Spirit (Nate Guevin),Team Manager (Dimitri Cesar), Most Goals (Alex Maggioni), Most Assists (Liam McKenna) and Most Ds (Wesley Mei). Coach Betz BC High Junior Varsity Ultimate 2014 After graduating 14 seniors last year, there was a big push to replenish the stocks at Boston College High School, and nowhere was that more evident this year than at the JV level. On the season, JV Ultimate went 107, including a 3rd place finish at St. John’s Prep Tournament and a 4th place finish at Abington Tournament. Only 4 of the 14 student-athletes had played Ultimate at BC High before, which makes the progress of the team all the more impressive and the future of the program all the more bright. Returning JV players Luke Tonry, Mike Evers, Brandon Dao, and Ashaley Ashley grounded the team all year, and brought a steadiness to the team. All three freshmen that made the JV team this year made immediate impacts, with Will Speciale leading the team in assists and d’s, Andrew Sanfilippo scoring the second-most goals, and Sam Rogers finishing third in assists. Handlers Gregg Selbert and Steven Yang proved consistent and smart, helping reign in the gunslingers with their smart decisions, especially when teams tried to slow us down with a zone defense. Meanwhile, our cutters worked hard to find a rhythm; while Thomas Cole and Drew Gelly stretched the defense deep, Thomas Arena and Brian Tung kept our flow alive with their in-cuts. Jerry Labissiere led the team in goals, using his mind-boggling speed to track down discs that nobody thought could be caught. Without question, the highlight of the season came in the Bronze-Medal game of the St. John’s Prep Tournament with 3rd place on the line. Down 8-2 at the half against archrival St. John’s Prep, BC High rallied to a 17-16 victory. With their backs against the wall and their legs tired from playing 5 games in one day, BC High dug deep and pulled off an incredible comeback against one of our biggest rivals. It is precisely this kind of grit and determination that bodes so well for the future of ultimate at BC High. Coach Conner
