Supporting trans and non-binary people through gender changes Dr Christina Richards Abstract: Trans and non-binary identified people may take steps to alter their social gender role and bodies such that they align with an internal sense of gender identity. This process can understandably be rather trying as social role change can bring resistance from others and uncertainty for the trans or non-binary person; and physical changes can be stressful and uncertain. As psychologists we can have a key role in supporting people who seek our assistance. We can for, example, offer ways to deal with stress; untangle internal and external stressors; examine the interactions between the biopsychosocial elements of the person’s lifeworld; and act as advocates, educators and activists as appropriate. This presentation will consider these and other roles, within the context of contemporary, primarily NHS based, psychological practice a variety of different models. She is passionate about working with cultural diversity and enjoys using creativity in her work.
