Sacred Harp Sing This year’s Sacred Harp Sing was held on February 9 as Baylor hosted over 60 people who gathered for this unique tradition. Students, faculty, and members of the community of all ages sang through the old folk tunes found in the 1991 edition of the Sacred Harp, a shape-note tunebook, first published by B. F. White and E. J. King in 1844. Mosaic The second annual Mosaic service took place on January 22, 2013. This service was planned and led by a team of student volunteers and was designed to present the Baylor community with a worship experience unlike what they would usually find in their local churches or Baylor chapel. YouthCUE Every February we host a YouthCUE festival on Baylor’s campus. This past year around 400 high school students, hailing from 4 states, were involved. We look forward to the upcoming YouthCUE festival, taking place February 21-23, 2014. Northcutt Lecture Series In April, we hosted Dr. Brian Wren who gave our 2013 Northcutt Lecture, “A Lyricists Appreciation of P.P. Bliss.” Dr. Wren is Emeritus Professor of Worship at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He is a writer, preacher, worship and workshop leader, and internationally published hymnpoet with seven hymn collections totaling 250 hymns. Hearn Innovators Series The Hearn Innovators in Christian Music Series is designed to bring to the Baylor campus people who are thinking creatively and blazing new trails in the field of Christian Music. These people may be involved in the practice, creation, or study of church music. Presenters are on campus for a three to four day residency and are available to speak in classes, make public presentations and visit with students in small groups and one-onone. In 2013, we had the pleasure of hosting Marcia McFee and Andrew Peterson. DECEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Focus on missions In 2012, 11 students traveled with Dr. Bradley and Dr. Swee Hong Lim to Sabah, Malaysia, where they interacted with local church musicians to perform collaborative concerts and provide instructional workshops on church music. In May 2014, another team of 30 students and professors is returning to build upon and expand our relationships within Sabah. They will be traveling to five towns and cities to connect with local church musicians to encourage, teach, and strengthen them in their ministry contexts. The team will be hosting workshops that will cover all aspects of church music from instrumental technique in piano, voice, guitar, conducting, etc. to the historical, liturgical, and theological roots of Christian worship. For more information on this missions adventure, visit www.baylor.edu/ccms/malaysia. In the summer of 2013, Dr. Bradley led the fourth expedition to Kenya with the Baylor University Men’s Choir. The main purpose of these trips was to give, share, and receive aspects of community present in the African culture and faith. The trip gave participants rich educational opportunities to interact with the music and culture of Kenya. The team partnered with schools, churches, and orphanages in Nairobi, Kenya, and the surrounding area. The partnerships involved giving concerts, and participating in hands-on service projects. The Baylor music team also delivered supplies to schools, churches, and orphanages. For more information, visit www.baylormenschoir.org/kenya. Alleluia Conference Giving to the Center The 12th annual Alleluia Conference was held July 23-26 and was a huge success with over 300 church musicians in attendance. For the third year we provided free registration for this event to high school and undergraduate students interested in studying church music. If you mentor or work with any students who might consider pursuing a degree at Baylor please encourage them to take advantage of this offer. This dates for the 2014 Conference are July 22-25 and information about clinicians and registration can be found at our website www.baylor.edu/alleluia. Video and audio files of presentations at the Alleluia Conference can be also be found on our website. The time is right to build up the Center for Christian Music Studies at Baylor University. Baylor's Center for Christian Music Studies was established in 1984 with a modest endowment and continues to encourage students and professionals interested in Christian music. However, Baylor needs to do more. As the world's largest Baptist university, Baylor is a leader, and people are looking to us to lead in the area of Christian Music.
