Mrs. Cain’s 1st Grade
Class Procedure Handbook
Hello! Welcome to 1st grade. We are going to have so much fun this year
learning new things, getting better at being organized, and making new
friends. There are a few things we all have to do in order to make our
classroom run smoothly.
Please take a moment to glance through our class procedure handbook. If
at any time we need to check and see how something is done, we can look back
in the book to make sure we are following the procedures. When students
forget procedures, I will ask them to look back in the handbook to find out
what they should be doing.
I know we are going to have a fantastic year!

Start of the Day
1. Greet Mrs. Cain in the hallway. You can choose to give
Mrs. Cain a hug, handshake, hi-five, or hello.
2. Hang up your backpack/coat. If you have a cold lunch, put it in the
lunch cart. Please use your assigned hook.
3. Get out your Take Home folder and place it on your desk.
4. Take out your AR book and place it on your desk.
5. Have 2 pencils ready to use for the day.
6. Check the board for instructions.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Pencil Sharpening
Students may not use the pencil sharpener unless Mrs. Cain give them
specific permission.
If you need a pencil, get one from the white pencil cup.
If your lead breaks during the day, and you do not have another pencil,
take the broken pencil to the red pencil cup; then you may get one from
the white pencil cup.
REMEMBER for your pencils: White is all right, Red is dead.
Morning Work
1.
2.
3.
4.
This is quiet time.
Read the front board for your directions.
Be sure to READ the assignment so you know what to do!
You have until attendance is taken, folders are checked and the
morning announcements are over to complete your assignment(s).
5. If you finish early, READ out of your book box.
Morning Meeting
4
1. After we have finished our morning work, we will all move to the
meeting spot to begin Morning Meeting.
2. We will make a good circle and stand in place.
3. Morning Meeting is an important way for us to learn and have fun
together. In order to make this possible, you MUST follow the rules for
Morning Meeting.
4. We say “Good Morning” to each other in a voice all can hear. We will
use the greeting the Helper of the Day chooses.
5. We will have a positive attitude.
6. We listen to each other. This means we do not talk when our friends are
talking. We do not talk when Mrs. Cain is talking.
7. We participate! This means listening, participating in activities, and
responding to questions.
8. We are all friends. We’ll try to sit by different friends each day.
9. When Morning Meeting is over, you are responsible to move to your
seat quickly and quietly so we can begin our next activity.
Bathroom & Drinks
5
1. You are free to use the bathroom as long as Mrs. Cain is not giving
direct instruction. This means, during a lesson you need to wait until
Mrs. Cain is finished giving directions or talking to get out of your seat.
2. You will need to get the “Bathroom Pass”. Put it on your desk. This
way I will know where you are and your classmates will know if there is
anyone in the bathroom.
3. Be sure you wash your hands in the bathroom. When you return, put
the “Bathroom Pass” back on the hook by the door.
4. As long as there is no one getting a drink at the same time as you would
like one, you may get a drink by simply asking Mrs. Cain and waiting
for a response. You can bring a water bottle to school. There will be a
special place for water bottles. You may not ask for a drink during
direct instructions. This means, during a lesson you need to wait until
Mrs. Cain is finished giving directions or talking to ask for a drink.
5. During snack time, you do NOT have to ask to get a drink. Mrs. Cain
will be reading aloud to the class and will not respond to you during
snack time.
Asking a Question
1. Raise your hand, quietly. When we call out, no one can hear what
anyone else is saying.
2. If I see your hand, I will know you have a question and I will give you
time to ask. You do not need to wave your hand in the air or make
noises. This is distracting to me and to the other students.
6
3. Be sure to LISTEN to your classmates so you can avoid asking the exact
same question.
4. Mrs. Cain will let you know when it is a “calling out” time and when it
is a “raise your hand” time. Please listen to find out what “time” it is.
When Another Student is Talking
1. We all want to be respected and heard. This is why when another
student is talking to the class during a lesson, we all will look at this
student and listen to them. Everyone has such great ideas and it is
important that we hear everyone.
2. We do not play in our desks when others are talking. We do not talk to
our neighbors when others are talking. We are a community of
students who know how to make responsible and respectful choices that
we can be proud of.
Exiting the Classroom
1. When it is time to leave the room, Mrs. Cain will ask you to line up.
Please do not line up until you are asked to do so. This is true even of
the line leaders. Problems lining up will result in us having to line up in
our student number order.
2. We wait in line quietly. Mrs. Cain will start out hallway poem or chant
and when everyone is ready to walk in the halls, we will leave the room.
Entering the Classroom
7
1. We enter our classroom quietly. Please come in and go to your seat.
Sometimes you will be asked to go to y our rug space, so listen. Mrs.
Cain will give directions/instructions when everyone is seated.
2. This is an excellent time to earn “coyote cash”.
Walking Down the Hall
1. Other students are learning in their classrooms, sometimes in the halls
in a small group, and we do not have the right to disturb or distract
them from their learning. We walk down the halls quietly. We are
responsible students who respect the rights of students who are
learning.
2. We walk on the right hand side of the hallway and stay in line, one
student behind the other.
3. There will be 2 lines: a boy line and a girl line, unless you are instructed
otherwise. The Helper of the Day will always walk first in line.
4. Being appropriate in line means: keeping your hands to yourself,
keeping your shoes on your feet, walking, and staying behind the person
in front of you. We stay together when walking in the halls. We are
respectful of other teacher’s time. We will do our best to be at our
location promptly.
5. We are all going to the same place, so there is no need to push and rush.
6. We are respectful of other’s work. We will not touch, tug, tear, or
destroy in any way, work displayed in the hallways.
7. Failure to walk and behave appropriately in the halls means we will line
up in student number order.
Turning Papers In
1. All completed assignments will always go in the plastic turn in box.
This box is located near Mrs. Cain’s desk.
8
2. You MUST put your name and date code on ALL your assignments.
This way, I know which good work is yours an we can keep track of how
you grow and change in your work habits by looking at assignment
dates.
Homework
1. You are expected to complete your weekly homework assignments. A
monthly homework calendar will be sent home so you will know what is
expected to be completed in any particular week. Homework is a review
of concepts and lessons already learned in class. Homework is a time to
practice what we have learned in class.
2. Homework is due on Friday, unless you prior arrangements have been
made with Mrs. Cain.
3. AR and/or pleasure reading are expected to be done nightly.
4. Students who choose not to complete their homework will be required
to complete it during “clubs” on Friday.
5. Students who do complete their weekly homework will be allowed to
choose a fun“club” on Friday.
Take Home Folders
1. You have been given a folder to use this year in 1st grade. You are
allowed to bring your own folder for the school year instead of using the
one your were given by Mrs. Cain.
2. You must bring it to school every day and take it home at night. Mrs.
Cain needs to check to see if you are reading every night.
3. If you forget your take home folder two days in a row, you will stay in
from recess and write a reminder note for yourself. Your parents wil
lneed to sign your note and help you look for your folder.
4. If you lose your folder, you will need to ask Mrs. Cain for another one.
9
Packing Up
1. We pack up after we return from lunch.
2. Be sure to check your mailbox for any papers, flyers or notes you need
to place inside your folder to take home.
3. Be sure to put your lunch box in your backpack if you brought it from
home.
4. At times Mrs. Cain will time the class during pack up. Our goal is to be
quick and quiet.
5. When all are seated, Mrs. Cain will give directions for what happens
next.
Exiting at the End of the Day
1. Mrs. Cain will ask you to stack your chair and put on your backpack.
The bell rings at 3:05. Mrs. Cain knows how to tell time and will not
make you late for a bus or parent pick-up.
2. Listen for Mrs. Cain to ask you to line up at the door.
3. When the bell rings, please say good-bye to Mrs. Cain. You will need to
exit the building on the right sid eof the hallway…remember that is the
side we walk on.
4. On the afternoon Mrs. Cain has duty, she will walk out with your,
otherwise you will be released from our classroom.
Show and Tell
1. We will have a Star of the Week each week. While we have a Star of the
Week, we will not have a class Show and Tell.
2. You may spend coyote cash to bring a Show and Tell item.
3. After all students have had a turn being Star of the Week we will have
weekly Show and Tell. Specific directions will be given at that time.
10
Bringing Toys to School
1. You may bring an item to share when it is your week for Star of the
Week.
2. It cannot leave our classroom, except to go home. This means it cannot
go to recess, lunch, or specials. You may not keep it in or on your desk.
3. After you share your toy, it must go back into your backpack or a safe
place designated by Mrs. Cain. If you do not follow this procedure,
Mrs. Cain will take your toy from you and not return it until the end of
the day.
Classroom Supplies
1. You will keep the supplies you’ve brought to school in your desk. They
need to be stored in a pencil box of some sort so they do not roll around
and get lost in your desk or floor. If you bring extra, Mrs. Cain will
store it for you in a specific location in the classroom.
2. We put away classroom supplies where you got them when your work is
completed.
3. If we are working on a project that required supplies not in your desk,
Mrs. Cain will select a student to assist the Helper of the Day to go and
collect and pass out the supplies that are needed.
4. Only the student or students Mrs. Cain selects will be allowed to return
the supplies.
11
Signals for Attention
1. When I need your attention, I will ring a bell (or other sound like a rain
stick, play a song, etc.); as soon as you hear the signal you are to STOP
what you are doing, put your hands on your head, look at me, and listen
for directions.
2. When the timer goes off (after we are finished with literacy or math
centers or other things during the day), you are to begin cleaning up
your area quickly and make your way to the rug area where you will get
directions/instructions for our next activity.
Pledge
1. The Helper of the Day will come to the front and hold the flag. When we
are all standing and respectful, we will begin.
2. When you hear/see the signal, stop what you are doing immediately and
stand up; place your right hand over your heart, say the Pledge of
Allegiance respectfully. During the moment of silence, quietly think
about the things you need to do today to make it a great day, how you
can learn and be respectful to those around you.
3. If you are arriving when we begin the pledge, stop where you are, place
your hand over your heart and say the pledge. After the moment of
silence you may bring me your late slip, put away your things and get
your day started.
Fire Drill
12
1. As soon as you hear the alarm go off, STOP EVERYTHING, stand up,
WALK quickly to the door but without running or pushing!
2. Mrs. Cain will take the Fire Drill clipboard. The last person out of the
classroom will make sure the lights are off and door closed.
3. There will not be a specific door holder or line leader for drills. You
will need to watch the door as you go out so it does not hit you.
4. Stay close together. NO TALKING. Walk to the designated line up spot
on the basketball court.
5. Face the grass. You may sit on the cement.
6. Answer “HERE” loudly when your name is called as well as RAISING
YOUR HAND so Mrs. Cain can see you in case she doesn’t hear you.
7. Wait quietly until we have an “all clear” signal.
8. When the “all clear” is given, stand up, turn and face the building and
WALK back to our classroom. There should be NO TALKING in the
halls as we return. This is so if we need to hear further instructions, it is
quiet enough to hear them from the PA system or person with the bull
horn.
9. If you are in a special or at lunch and the fire alarm goes off, you will
walk to our designated spot and follow the procedures as above.
Lock Down Drill
2.
3.
4.
5.
1. The teacher or substitute will refer to the Emergency Manual for
specific instructions on accounting for all students
When you hear the “lock down” announcement over the PA system
STOP what you are doing and WALK to the area nearest the teacher’s
desk. You are to be OUT OF SIGHT from the hall door.
The classroom lights will remain ON. Students will remain QUIET.
If you are in the bathroom or hall when the announcement is made, you
will be swept into the nearest classroom.
The classroom door will be locked and you will not be allowed to enter
until after the drill is completed.
13
Consequences
1. Sometimes we make mistkes, and that is OK! The first time a rule or
procedure is broken, you will receive a verbal warning. That means
Mrs. Cain will remind you what you should be doing. She may ask you
to use the Procedure Handbook to figure out what the right choice is.
2. The second time it happens, you will be asked to “clip down”. {Please
refer to the class Behavior Management document for specifics
regarding clipping up and clipping down.}
3. Other consequences include, but are not limited to: going to the buddy
room, going to another first grade classroom for a time, losing a
privilege, a phone/email/letter home, or an office referral per the school
handbook.
Rewards
1. Thank you for making good choices! You can be rewarded with a piece
of candy, coyote cash, an award from your teacher, and the BEST
reward of all is getting to feel good about yourself and your choices! We
are responsible learners and will work on making the best choices even
when no one is looking and we get no tangible reward.
2. Mrs. Cain will also hand out coyote cash during the day. You can earn
coyote cash for things like following directions, receiving compliments
from other staff members, making good choices, bringing your folder to
school each day, having your AR book available daily, and many other
things.
3. You also will be working on trying to “clip up” during the day. All the
things mentioned above and more will be ways to “clip up”.
14
4. Put your name on your coyote cash and keep it in a safe place. It is your
responsibility to keep track of them. We will spend coyote cash every
other week. If you lose it, it’s gone .
