FACTSHEET Date : 22 June 2015 Subject: Gautrain Midrand Depot and Workshop The Gautrain Depot in Midrand is the central location in relation to the operations of the Gautrain system. It is the operational hub of the system. All train movements are controlled from the Operations Control Centre (OCC) housed at the depot and the entire train fleet is also staged and maintained there. The bus operations control centre and maintenance facilities for the buses is also housed at the nearby Bus depot at the Midrand Depot. Depot Maintenance Building The maintenance building in the Depot houses five maintenance tracks capable of accommodating five 4-car trains simultaneously. One of the five maintenance tracks is designated for heavy maintenance (overhaul) and typical maintenance tasks such as repairs, bodywork and repainting. In addition the maintenance building is used for maintenance work on rail-borne wayside maintenance vehicles. There is a 10 ton overhead crane that moves large sub-assemblies, e.g. bogies, motors, couplers, to and from the respective repair areas. The maintenance building also contains facilities for inventory storage, workshops, staff offices and amenities. Storage & By- Pass Tracks There are four storage tracks for the storage of trains not intended for the maintenance building. The four storage tracks provides space capacity of 96 Gautrain rail-cars. Interior cleaning, minor troubleshooting and vehicle diagnostics is carried out in the storage lanes. An exterior car wash facility and a sanding facility, that is used to refill the sandbox onboard the train, are located on a separate track. This track is adjacent to the storage backs and is referred to as the by-pass track. The by-pass track facilitates movement of trains and equipment within the Depot when the storage tracks are occupied. It is suited for vehicle testing after repairs when verification is required. In addition, it will serve as staging track storage when any other storage track is closed for maintenance purposes. Specialised Work Areas Designated repair shops and open work areas are provided within the maintenance building for specialised maintenance activities such as: Bogie Replacement Area A maintenance track is dedicated to bogie replacement and is fitted with an in-floor cantilever lift system capable of lifting a 4-car train set and dropping one or more bogies. The track has a turntable at the North end of the track to facilitate bogie transfer to and from the bottom of the train. General Mechanical Area The general mechanical area is equipped to perform second line maintenance to vehicle subsystems. Electronics Shop The electronics shop is equipped to perform second line maintenance activities for system wide electronic subsystems. The electronic systems include: o vehicle and wayside radio, o public address, Page 2 o closed circuit television, and o telephone. Wayside Equipment Repair Area and Shop The wayside mechanical shop is equipped to perform second line maintenance activities on wayside systems. Small Parts Paint Shop The small parts paint shop is equipped to perform protective painting on small mechanical items Battery Shop The shop is equipped with a battery charging system. BrakelPneumatic/HVAC shop The Brake/Pneumatic/HVAC (Heating, ventilation and Air-Conditioning) shop is equipped to perform second line maintenance on these subsystems. Page 3 Stores The stores accommodate spares, utilising standard modular storage racks and bins of the appropriate capacity. The stores area is enclosed, with aisle spaces between racks and bins. There is provision for the 10t crane coverage for part of the stores area to facilitate transfer of goods to/from the shipping and receiving area. Large items not requiring protection from the elements (running rails, sleepers) will be stored in the outdoor storage area, located at the South end of the Depot.
