The Pride of Joburg. 9.15 3.25 An ideal time to visit this section of the inner City with its most important places - Gandhi Square, the very handsome Rand Club, Hollard Square with the old stamp battery and fountain representing the basin of the Witwatersrand, then moving north to the Johannesburg Public Library recently restored, and back to a headgear before reaching 44 Main Street. EMOYENI to THE VIEW: Randlords homes in their glory 9.00 am 3.00 hours Start at Emoyeni with an Inside Tour and spectacular view to the Magaliesberg, cross York Road to glimpse The Causeway and Hazeldene Hall with its double storeyed cast-iron veranda and end with an inside tour of The View, home of Sir Thomas Cullinan of diamond fame. GREEN SPACES AND THE PARKS Bus tour 10am 1.5 hours The suburbs known as The Parks have a wide range of architectural style and homes including pioneers and celebrities, but their greatest heritage lies in the watercourses and the trees. The character of the garden city was developed here by the Braamfontein Company and cherished by home owners thereafter. SATURDAY AFTERNOON DOWN HOSPITAL HILL 7th September 2013 Walking tour 2.00pm 2.15 hours Starting with the old Fever Hospital (now Braampark) with the Florence Nightinglae wards and the long colonnade which underlines the seriousness of Measles, then down Joubert Street passing Nurses’ Home to the Children’s Memorial Institute built in 1923 as a children’s hospital. We visit the memorial Hall and old wards and end the tour at the Queen Victoria Maternity Home. IT NEARLY DISAPPEARED IN SMOKE! 2.45pm 2.00 hours Building tour Mother Ambrose’s dream come true - A school for young ladies! Holy Family College ( formerly Parktown Convent) is a series of very fine 1905 building by Beardwood. Magnificently endowed with delicate lace of cast iron which thankfully was not consumed by flames when the school hall caught fire. Steep stairs lead right up to the attics where the school museum and Edwardian classroom await, and you have a chance to write with a dip pen. NORTHWARDS to THE STONEHOUSE Walking Tour 2.00pm 2.5 hours Sir Herbert Baker’s stamping ground. The architect who dominated domestic architecture in Johannesburg for two generations is seen at best here with his most romantic mansion, his own home and those of his neighbours . It’s the blue plaque route which contains his finest designs – the Highveld Houses . THE DEEP SOUTH Bus Tour 2.00pm 2 hours Booysens, Rosettenville, Turffontein, Kenilworth and out to Mondeor. Discover the stables of Sir Abe Bailey, the house where the Dale Laces ended their days and the home of artist Maud Sumner all to the background of mines and mine dumps. NB Tour restricted to 20 people. VILLA ARCADIA to ETUNZINI Walking tour 9.30 3 hours From the Herbert Baker mansion to a minor masterpiece by Gordon Leith, both masters of Arts and Crafts tradition. We start at Villa Arcadia, the home of Sir Lionel and Lady Phillips, which served for 80 years as the Jewish Children’s home. Now beautifully restored by Hollard displaying fine contemporary South African artwork. Then walk down to see Etunzini, the home of the Glenton family for three generations. Climb the steep steps to the attic to enjoy the school museum and take blotting paper and dip pen in the Edwardian classroom. BUS TO BEZ VALLEY & FARM DOORNFONTEIN Bus Tour 10.00 2.00 hours 12 noon Leaving the townships built on farm Braamfontein we rise to Highlands for our first view of the mine dumps then wind down Stewart Drive to Judith’s Paarl and on into Bezuidenhout Valley to the original farmhouse which enjoyed views of the ridges before the gold diggers arrived. Back past Rand Preparatory School, Athlone Boys with rifle pits, the New York Steam Laundry, the pepperpot houses and we leave Doornfontein for The Wilds. 8th September SUNDAY AFTERNOON WESTCLIFF: Walking Tour 2.00 hours 2.00 Springtime along Pallinghurst Road, the epitome of beautiful homes and lovely gardens. Wonderful old manor houses such as Ye Rokkes of Jolly fame Duntreath which was designed by Herbert Baker as was Westcliff with its rolling lawns and knot-garden. NORTHWARDS 2.00 2.5 hours As enchanting as Jose Dale Lace herself, this is the most romantic house in Parktown. Standing high on the Parktown ridge with a view to the M1 and the Magaliesberg, Northwards was designed to be seen and to entertain. The garden is delightful, the reception rooms are beautifully furnished and it is all in immaculate condition. Encounter this voluptuous lady in the portrait in her drawing room. A QUIET SUNDAY IN THE CITY Walking tour 2.30 pm 2.5 hours Not quite the centre, but where it all started – around Ferreira’s Camp. We stroll through Ferreirasdorp, Chinatown, Chancellor House, waletr Sisulu Square towards Newtown and Mary Fitzgerald Square. STRUGGLE SITES Bus Tour 2.00pm 3 hours Joburg the rebellious mining town is most proud of its Struggle sites which are concentrated in the City centre, but we start the story in Freedom Square in Kliptown. Some sites have been aptly celebrated, some are little known and a few are perhaps best forgotten. The tour includes The Grays where many were tortured, the site of Marshall Square from which 4 Rivonia men escaped and Beyers Naude Square, the heart of protest and even a battle ground.
