Another beautiful summer at Cawaja comes to an end

CAWAJA PROPERTYOWNERS ASSOCIATION
(Established in 1955, Incorporated in 1965)
2015 SUMMER NEWSLETTER
President’s Welcome
Spring Housekeeping Issues
Greetings
With many of the residences being seasonal we would like to
remind all owners to replace their smoke detector batteries. This
simple action can prevent a serious accident from occurring. Given
the distance to the nearest fire station all owners must be vigilant
regarding fire safety. If any owner is planning to have an exterior
controlled fire on their property they must have a permit from the
Township. Permits can be obtained from the Township office. We
also recommend having a fire extinguisher and hose pipe at hand
for added safety. With the long weekends during spring and
summer we remind all residents that setting off fireworks after
11:00 P.M. is in violation of the Township’s by-laws. We ask that
any individual setting off fireworks check for fire bans in advance.
This will avoid any accidents as well as fines being levied.
I would like to extend my greetings to the members of the Cawaja
community. At the winter board meeting of the CPOA I was
elected President of the association. I am looking forward to
serving the membership during my tenure. For over fifty years I
have been a resident of Cawaja Beach and have seen a lot of
change during that period of time. It is a pleasure to serve the
community that I have a strong affiliation with.
I would like to thank both Richard and Cathy Hinton for the years
of dedication they have given to the CPOA. Both Richard and
Cathy have put a lot of time into our community which is much
appreciated. I was pleased that he has decided to remain on our
board as a director. We wish Richard well with his new
responsibilities as a councilor. In addition I would like to thank the
other CPOA board members for all of their time working on behalf
of the community. So much time is spent by the board working on
issues for the grater community good on a volunteer basis.
We encourage all residents of the Cawaja community to join the
association. The nominal annual fee of $75.00 allows the board to
pay for services such as insurance, spring cleanup, dealing with
the invasive weeds “phragmites” that have taken hold at the North
end of the beach, security on long weekends, newsletters and
website maintenance. At present we have a 40% participation rate
which we need to improve upon if we are to maintain the
community we all appreciate. Please forward you payments to the
association secretary. A membership form is attached for ease of
submission.
Looking forward to a prosperous 2015.

Beach Maintenance
The annual spring cleanup was completed on May 30. Debris that
had washed ashore over the winter months was removed. In
addition the four paths leading to the beach were cleaned and
groomed.
Members of the board will be meeting with officials from the
greater Georgian Bay Community to discuss the phragmites
infestation. We are reviewing the current strategies to address this
invasive species. At present we are cutting the plants twice a year
to limit their spread. We ask all members of the community to
dispose of any roots they may observe on the beach to limit this
plant’s expansion.
Given that all residences at Cawaja are on a septic system they
should think of the last time their holding tank was pumped out.
This will avoid problems with their plumbing system as well as
prevent any pollution of the ground water where all residents’ tap
water is drawn. Residents should also test their tap water for
quality with a simple test kit available at the Township offices.
With the co-ownership agreement in place the Township by-law
officers and OPP will be patrolling the beach once again. We
remind all residents that fines can be levied for the following
actions:
 Having an animal on the beach between 10am – 6pm
(June 15-September 15)
 Operating a barbeque or having a fire on the beach
 Drinking alcohol on the beach.
 Operating a motorized vehicle on the beach.
We ask all residents and their guests to obey the rules in order to
make the beach a safer and enjoyable environment. For a
complete copy of the by-laws for Cawaja please visit our website
at www.cpoa.ca
Cawaja Pines General Store
The general store is now open for business once again. It was a
pleasure to have the store open during 2014. We remind all
residents to please patronize the store given its fine selection of
convenience items. To have a store where we can purchase many
of the daily staples we all need near the cottage is a great
pleasure. Quality ice cream and coffee are served on premise to
enjoy while walking along the beach. While picking up your
newspapers please consider purchasing some of the other quality
items on offer to maintain this excellent service in the community.

MYRA JOSEPHINE SENNETT (née GREENSLADE) 'Babs', as
she was affectionately named by her father, passed away
peacefully in her sleep on March 23, 2015, in her 92nd year. She
was the beloved wife of the late Roy Sennett. In spite of declining
health, they both felt blessed to have been able to spend their last
years together and appreciated the kindness and care offered by
the staff at Belmont House, which made this possible. 'Babs' was
a devoted 'Mom' to Ted and a very proud and loving 'Grandma' to
Thomas. A dear sister to the late Lloyd Greenslade, as well as to
Betty Tomlinson and her late husband Harvey. She was 'Auntie
Babs' to her niece and nephews and their families and to Brian
and Stephen Chung. And she was an adored 'Baba' to so many
young friends and neighbours, who always felt welcome at her
home on Chudleigh Avenue and at the family cottage. She was
'Miss Greenslade' to many of her students at the University of
Toronto's Faculty of Nursing, after graduating in 1946 with the first
BScN class. She eventually chose a path that led away from the
academic world and with Roy's support she was able to care for
her father at home. She never allowed his dementia to take away
his dignity or respect. From the age of three she would return
every summer to Cawaja, where she would go for a daily swim in
Georgian Bay, even well into her eighties. She encouraged
everyone to enjoy the beach and to care for all that nature offered
us there.
