Set Up: Ask students to brainstorm a list all of the household appliances they have at home that they believe use energy. Distribute the “Household Appliance Energy Quiz” and have students decide the function of the common household appliances and then rank them by the amount of energy they use. Go over answers and ask students if the ranking is affected by the method of energy use. Discuss how energy is used by appliances that students mentioned during brainstorming that was not covered on the quiz. (ex. computer, VCR, clock, etc…) Have students brainstorm alternatives to using the appliances listed. Ask students which appliances they could live comfortably without. Are there alternatives to using any of the appliances listed earlier? Discuss steps students can take at home to conserve energy. Appliance What am I?
