After he discovers the Count laying the table in the dining room, Jonathan Harker’s thinks that since the Count does all these menial offices, it is surely proof that there are no servants and/or nobody else to do them. (pg 38) 2. Count Dracula claims to be the ancestor of what famous warrior? Count Dracula claims to be the ancestor of the famous warrior Attila, a warrior of the Huns. (pg 39) 3. What does the Count warn Jonathan not to do when he is alone at night? The Count warns Jonathan not to fall asleep in any other parts of the castle when he is alone at night. (pg 45) 4. Describe the way Jonathan Harker sees the Count leave the Castle. Jonathan Harker sees the Count leave the Castle “face down, with his cloak spreading out around him like great wings.” Jonathan Harker’s feelings changed to repulsion and terror to see an old man move downwards with such considerable speed, like a lizard moves along a wall. (pg 46-47) 5. Jonathan Harker falls asleep in the parlor. What does he see upon waking? Upon waking in the parlor, Jonathan Harker sees three young women who cast no shadows. “Two were dark, and had high aquiline noses, like the Count’s, and great dark, piercing eyes, that seemed to be almost red when contrasted with the pale yellow moon. The other was fair, as fair as can be, with great, wavy masses of golden hair and eyes like pale sapphires.” “All three had brilliant white teeth.” They laughed, and the fair one went over to Jonathan and leaned over as if to grasp his throat with her mouth, but paused and was halted by the Count. (pg 52-53) 6. Describe the Count’s reaction to finding the women with Jonathan Harker. To finding the women with Jonathan Harker, the Count was furious, filled with wrath and fury. He grasped the neck of the fair one and drew it back. “His eyes were positively blazing.” “His face was deathly pale, and the lines of it were hard like drawn wires.” He hurled the woman from him with a sweep of his arm and yelled at the young women. Jonathan Harker believes he hears a gasp of a half-smothered child in the bag the Count had thrown to the floor. (pg 54) 8. What happens to the women and the bag? The women and bag disappeared as if they just simply faded into the rays of the moonlight and passed out through the window. (pg 54) 9. The Count instructs Jonathan to write three letters home. What is the content of these letters? The Count instructs Jonathan to write three letters home, one saying that Jonathan’s work there was nearly done and that he should start home within a few days, another that he was starting on the next morning from the time of the letter, and the third that Jonathan had left the castle and arrived at Bistritz. (pg 56) 10. Jonathan attempts to send letters home without the Count reading them. What happens to the letters? The letters Jonathan attempts to send home without the Count reading them were apparently given to the Count by the Szgany. The Count looks at the letters and then holds them above the flame of the lamp until they were consumed. (pg 58) 11. What does Jonathan discover upon waking on 31 May? Upon waking on 31 May, Jonathan discovers every scrap of paper was gone including his notes, his memoranda, and his letter of credit. All that might be useful to Jonathan if he were once outside the castle was gone. (pg 59) 12. What do the Slovaks deliver to the castle? The Slovaks deliver empty, square boxes, with handles of thick rope to the castle. (pg 60) 13. When Count Dracula leaves the castle on 24 June, what does Jonathan Harker notice? When Count Dracula leaves the castle on 24 June, Jonathan Harker notices that the Count is wearing his suit of clothes he had worn travelling there and was allowing others to see him as Jonathan, so that any wickedness which he would do would be attributed to Jonathan. (pg 61) 14. Jonathan goes to the window when he hears the agonizing cry of a woman. What does she yell upon seeing Jonathan’s face in the window? What happens to the woman as she continues to bang on the door of the Count’s castle? As she continues to bang on the door of the Count’s castle, the Count calls the wolves in his harsh, metallic whisper. The wolves enter the courtyard and leave licking their lips, obviously having just devoured the woman. (pg 63) 16. Jonathan decides to climb the wall of the castle into the Count’s room. Describe what Jonathan Harker discovers in the Count’s room. When Jonathan climbs the wall of the castle into the Count’s room, he discovers the room empty. “It was barely furnished with odd things, which seemed to have never been used.” After searching for a key and having no luck, Jonathan also discovers a great heap of gold in one corner of all kinds: Roman, British, Austrian, Hungarian, Greek, and Turkish. Almost all the items were covered with a layer of dust. (pg 65) 17. Jonathan tells the Count that he wants to leave the night of 29 June, but he suddenly changes his mind. Why? Jonathan suddenly changes his mind about leaving on the night of 29 June because when the Count opens the doors, the wolves were outside howling. He realized if he left then, the wolves would tear him to pieces. (pg 68) 18. What does Jonathan Harker find when he goes back to the Count’s room to look for a key to the door? When Jonathan Harker goes back to the Count’s room to look for a key to the door, he finds the Count, with gouts of fresh blood on his lips, and looking like he was simply gorged with blood.
