History Department Internships Summer 2013 Application deadline: 1500, 18 Jan 2013 POC: CAPT Tom Robertson 1. Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) National Security Analysis Department (Baltimore, MD) This internship will involve assisting the JHU/ALP National Security Analysis Department with ongoing multidisciplinary research projects. This assignment would include and necessitate in depth historical analysis and the creation of historical case studies concerning the researched topic. A midshipman participating in this internship will be exposed to national security analysis and learn to integrate academic research into the tactical and strategic planning process. The midshipmen will be working side by side with historians, political scientists, psychologists, active and retired military officers and other academics while learning about their assigned research area. Required: Midshipmen applying for this internship must be History majors; must be rising second or first class; must be U.S. citizens. Expected: Midshipmen applying for this internship should be able to conduct quality individual research as evidenced by a grade of an “A” or “B” in an appropriate irregular warfare course; midshipmen should also have completed a course with a substantial component dealing with irregular warfare such as: HH386A History of Modern Counterinsurgency, HH 372 The Golden Age of Piracy, HH 367B War, Conflict and Insurgency in Africa, FP384 Politics of Irregular Warfare and HH367A History of India, Afghanistan and Pakistan;. Midshipmen selected for this internship will require only a Secret security clearance prior to starting the internship. JHU/APL will allow midshipmen selected for this internship to berth in Bancroft Hall and eat breakfast and dinner at USNA. If the selected midshipmen choose to reside in Bancroft Hall during the internship, they will be eligible for COMRATS reimbursement for one meal each workday. The midshipmen can also file for mileage reimbursement for their travel directly to/ from the lab. If the selected midshipmen reside outside of Bancroft Hall, they will receive no reimbursement for this internship. JHU/APL will provide an office, phone and internet connectivity. Working hours would be M-F 0830-1700. 2. U.S. Army War College Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI) in Carlisle, PA This internship will involve assisting the United States Army Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute with a multidisciplinary research project being conducted for the US Army. Its purpose is to improve Army doctrine as it relates to stability and peacekeeping operations. The interns would be treated as full-fledged members of the Army War College (AWC) staff and be required to participate in staff meetings and AWC events. This assignment would include and necessitate in depth historical analysis and the creation of historical case studies concerning the researched groups. A midshipman participating in this internship will be exposed to high-level strategic thought concerning national security and military participation in stability and peacekeeping operations. The midshipmen will be working side by side with O-6s/ GS-12s and above. Required: Midshipmen applying for this internship must be History majors; must be rising second or first class; and must be U.S. citizens. Expected: Midshipmen applying for this internship should be able to conduct quality individual research as evidenced by a grade of an “A” or “B” in an appropriate upper level history course. Midshipmen selected for this internship will require only a Secret security clearance prior to starting the internship. PKSOI is willing to provide berthing in an on-site barracks. PKSOI will also provide an office, phone and internet connectivity. PKSOI cannot provide transportation, meals or per diem; these will be the responsibility of participating midshipmen. Working hours would be M-F 0830-1700. 3. Marine Corps University (MCU) in Quantico, VA This internship will involve assisting Marine Corps University with ongoing multidisciplinary research projects concerning the history of Marine operations. Its purpose is to improve Marine doctrine as it relates to war-fighting. The interns would be treated as full-fledged members of the Marine Corps University (MCU) staff and participate in staff meetings and MCU events. This assignment would include and necessitate in depth historical analysis and the creation of historical case studies concerning the researched operations. A midshipman participating in this internship should be exposed to high-level strategic thought concerning national security and Marine Corps operations. The midshipmen will be working side by side with civilian and military historians. Required: Midshipmen applying for this internship must be History majors; must be rising second or first class; and must be U.S. citizens. Expected: Midshipmen applying for this internship should be interested in a career in the Marine Corps and able to conduct quality individual research as evidenced by a grade of an “A” or “B” in an appropriate upper level history course. Midshipmen selected for this internship will require only a Secret security clearance prior to starting the internship. MCU should be able to provide DFAC meals and berthing in on-site lodging quarters. MCU will also provide an office, phone and internet connectivity. All other costs will be the responsibility of participating midshipmen. Working hours would be M-F 0830-1700.
