Job Purpose
The post-holder is responsible for practical and theoretical training upon a variety of Driver Training Courses
run by the Driver Training Unit, to enable students to reach the required national standard of driving
competence. To ensure Road Traffic Regulations and policy are complied with, and include constant
supervision of students throughout the duration of the course.
Main Responsibilities

Course Administration - Undertake pre-course administration, eyesight testing, and provision of local
information, equal opportunities and Health and Safety

Practical Driving Instruction - Demonstrate and instruct driving skills to improve student’s
knowledge and attitude

Driving skills – Lecturing - Prepare and present lectures on a wide variety of driving and motoring
topics

Student Assessment - Compile ongoing assessment of student’s throughout their course

Knowledge up date - Keeps abreast of changes in legislation, technological developments, regulations,
and policy directives

Student Testing - Carries out mid course progress and final drive skills testing

Emergency Response Training - Demonstrate and instruct driving skill techniques in the use of
emergency response equipment. The restrictions placed on students in operational circumstances

Pursuit - Demonstrate and instruct driving skills and techniques whilst engaged in a simulated pursuit
situation. The restrictions placed on officers in operational circumstances

Skid Car Instruction - Demonstrate and instruct skidding skills

Knowledge of ‘Human Aspects of Police Driving’ in relation to ‘Attitudes’

‘Emergency Response’ and ‘Pursuit
Knowledge of skidding techniques in relation to the use of skid car
Knowledge of 4 x 4 off road terrain training
Prepare student driving skills assessment documents and compile reports at end of
course, making recommendations as required

After suitable period of induction into the department and organisation:
If a student trainer has previously passed any of the Police Standard, Advanced or Instructors’ courses prior
to January 2000, they will have to undertake a driving assessment to confirm that their skill levels match the
current standards of competence
The student trainer will be given copies of Highway Code and ‘Roadcraft’ prior to attending as a student the
following courses:
A Police ‘Standard’ driving course (4 weeks)


On day one take theory paper under exam conditions. Pass mark 66%
Undertake practical driving instruction to the National (ACPO) Standards of Competence, during
which students are assessed and progress tested in week 2. Action plans for areas of weakness are
created where appropriate, providing they do not involve bringing other road users into danger
 A final assessed drive during the latter part of week 3. The required standards of competence must be
reached at this stage prior to week 4 pursuit training. Failure to do so may mean failing the course
 Final day, re – take theory paper if initially unsuccessful. Achieving a minimum of 66% is essential on
this second attempt, as not doing so equates to failing the course
 The Driver Trainer in charge prepares a written assessment of each student. This will include a
recommendation for inclusion on a Police ‘Advanced’ driving course
Note: The recommendation for inclusion to the next course will be based on evidence of your performance
in the following areas:





Your ability to evaluate your own practice
Your ability to identify self development needs
Your ability to adapt your own practice to meet changes in training and development
How you manage relationships with colleagues
How you manage relationships with students
A period of time for consolidation of training (minimum 2 - 4 weeks) will be followed by:
A Police ‘Advanced’ driving course (4 weeks)



Undertake practical driving instruction to the National (ACPO) Standards of Competence, during
which students are regularly assessed and progress tested. Action plans for areas of weakness are
created where appropriate, providing they do not involve bringing other road users into danger.
 Three exams are taken during the course and an 86% pass mark is expected in each paper. One re-sit
is only permitted on the first paper.
 The Driver Trainer in charge prepares a written assessment of each student. This will include a
recommendation that the student Trainer is competent and skilled to the required levels to instruct
Police Staff in driving techniques.
On successful completion of the Instructors course the post holder will commence training Wiltshire Police
Students up to Police Standard Response level. If the post holder is required to train external students the
ADI qualification will be required.

Ancillary Matters:
Assist in the organisation of exhibitions and conferences held at the Driving School
The ability to respond calmly and efficiently when first on the scene of a road accident or other incident
requiring emergency service involvement
Wiltshire Police provides a 24 hour 7 day a week service therefore applicants should be prepared to be flexible
in their approach to working hours.
The post holder should have access to a vehicle or be able to make alternative arrangements to meet the
requirements of the post.
Where applicable the post holder will be expected to wear a uniform at all times when on duty.
You will be required to attend all necessary and relevant training courses in respect of your employment to
ensure compliance with the policies of the Force.
