FILMMAKER RESIDENCY 2016
Call for applications
Deadline: 18th January 2016
Cove Park – Filmmaker Residency
In 2016 Cove Park will, for the first time, award a funded Filmmaker Residency of 4
weeks during the summer months, followed by 2 weeks in the winter months, for a
screenwriter or director working in Scotland. Mid-career or established filmmakers
are welcome to apply to this programme. As this is a pilot residency strand at Cove
Park early career screenwriters/directors should not apply – please see criteria
below.
Within the residency, the selected filmmaker (screenwriter or writer/director) will
invite, or ask Cove Park to invite on their behalf, 2 or 3 individuals from different
fields or sectors (for example an actor, geographer, marine biologist etc.) This aims
to bring a new dynamic to the filmmaker’s research or practice, and to the wider mix
of artists on site. The selected filmmaker will previously not have worked with any of
those he/she brings to Cove Park, and will spend up to 1 week with each,
consecutively or simultaneously.
For this pilot programme, the summer residency will take place during May to
September 2016 with the follow-up winter residency happening during November or
December 2016. Splitting the residency into 2 sections will allow the filmmaker to
benefit from both the busy and varied creative exchange central to the summer
programme, and from a quieter period within our programme.
Background
Founded in 1999 by Peter and Eileen Jacobs, Cove Park creates year-round funded
and self-funded residencies across all art forms for national and international artists,
collaborative groups and organisations. Cove Park is located on an outstanding 50acre site overlooking Loch Long on Scotland's west coast (just 60 minutes from
Glasgow by road or rail).
Funded Residency Programme
Cove Park’s summer residency programme provides the time and support for artists
to focus exclusively upon their own practice. The emphasis is upon research,
experimentation, creative exchange across art forms and the development of new
work. The filmmaker will be part of a changing group of national and international
residents specialising in a wide variety of art forms. All of the artists are invited to
take part in a series of informal studio presentations, talks, screenings and dinners
organised by Cove Park throughout the summer programme. Residents may also
have the opportunity to contribute to ‘Hands-On Cove Park’ a new public
educational and participatory programme of events and activities.
Facilities and Resources
The facilities and resources available include:
•
High quality self-catering accommodation.
•
Private studio (during the winter weeks only)
•
Communal workspace and equipment (although Cove Park has a good
supply of basic tools and equipment, including a 60-litre kiln, residents may need to
bring any specialised equipment or materials that they require).
•
The new Artist’s Centre*: communal meeting and dining space,
library, archive, computer suite, kitchen and laundry facilities
•
Unlimited access to the 50-acre site.
•
Cove Park has some basic film and sound recording equipment – more
details can be provided if required.
*Please note: Cove Park is currently building a new Artist’s Centre (a building which
will house, in addition to the communal space for artists, Cove Park’s offices, meeting
rooms, space for public events and two new accommodation unit and studios). This
building is due to open in Spring 2016.
Dates and Duration of the Residency
The 4-week residency will take place at Cove Park between May and September
2016, with 2 additional weeks offered during November or December 2016. Cove
Park will work with the selected filmmaker to ensure that both the dates and
duration of their residency are as beneficial as possible for the filmmaker and Cove
Park. It is not necessary to state your preferred dates in your application, as this will
be discussed with each shortlisted applicant at interview.
Fees
The selected filmmaker, and those they invite to attend for 1 week, will each receive
a fee of £400* per week.
*Please note: the Resident’s Fee is inclusive of VAT and payable by Cove Park to the
filmmaker and those attending from other disciplines or fields. The appointment is on
a freelance basis and the filmmaker and those attending from other disciplines or
fields will be responsible for paying his or her own tax and national insurance.
Selection Criteria & Process
Selection for interview will be based on the following criteria:
•
The quality of your ideas and previous self-authored work
•
Demonstration that your work has travelled internationally
•
Demonstration that you have made at least 1 feature that has been
distributed. We will also consider those that have made a number of shorts films
that have received critical acclaim internationally
•
Your need for a period of research and development and your reasons
for applying to this residency programme.
•
Your interest in working within a community of artists, including a
willingness to discuss and share ideas
Please note the filmmaker residency is specifically a time of exploration and
experimentation for a screenwriter or director working on a self-authored
documentary or narrative film project. Those applying with the initial seed of an idea
will be favoured over those with a project already underway. For those wishing to
spend some time at Cove Park on a commission or project, self-funded residencies
are available September – April each year.
Deadline for applications: Monday 18th January 2016.
The selection panel will include Cove Park Staff, Trustees and Film Advisors.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by 1st February
2016.
Interviews will take place at Cove Park in February or March 2016 (those unable to
travel may be interviewed via Skype). Reasonable travel expenses incurred by the
artist will be reimbursed by Cove Park on the submission of receipts.
