RULES
The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.
The prescriptions of the RYA will apply.
Racing rule(s) 27.1, A4, A5, 62.1(a), 28.1, 35, 60.1(a), 66 will be changed. The changes
appear in full in the sailing instructions.
Rules of the Sigma 33 Offshore One Design Class will apply.

SPONSOR ADVERTISING
Boats may be required to display sponsor stickers. These will be issued at registration and
shall be fixed to both sides of the boat before racing.

NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at Quoile Yacht
Club

CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 1000 on the day it will take
effect, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 2000 on the day
before it will take effect.

SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
Signals made ashore will be displayed at the Clubhouse.
When flag AP is displayed ashore, ‘1 minute’ is replaced with ‘not less than 60 minutes’ in
the race signal AP.
When flag Y is displayed ashore, rule 40 applies at all times while afloat. This changes the
Part 4 preamble.

RACING AREAS
Racing will take place in Strangford Lough in the vicinity of Killyleagh

THE COURSES and SHORTENING COURSE.
Saturday Race 1 shall be a ‘Round the Lough’ type race using a line start. The course shall
be as displayed on the Committee Boat.
Saturday Race 2 shall be a ‘Round the Lough’ race as part of Killyleagh Regatta. For full

Regatta. It includes a chart of the Lough Racing marks used.
Sunday Races 3, 4 & 5 shall be ‘windward/leeward’ type races as per the diagrams and
descriptions in Addendum A.
A Race may be shortened in accordance with Rule 32. A minimum of three legs will be
sailed before a course is shortened. If a Shortened Course is signalled before the first boat
has passed mark 3, boats shall leave mark 3 to port and sail directly through the finish line.
A shortened race may also be finished at any mark by a boat flying a blue flag and an S
flag and giving the appropriate sound signal.
10 MARKS & COMMITTEE BOAT
10.1 Marks for Races 3,4 &5 shall be yellow spherical buoys
Marks for Race 1 & 2 shall be Lough marks, details on
http://www.strangfordloughregattas.co.uk/ Killyleagh Regatta and these SI’s.
10.2 The Committee Boat shall be a Broom 38 ‘SALPARA’. She shall fly an Orange flag.
11 THE START
11.1 Races 1,3,4 & 5 will be started by using rule 26.
Race 2, see Killyleagh Regatta SI’s.
11.2 The starting line for Races1,3,4 &5 will be between a red and white post on the committee
boat displaying an orange flag and a yellow spherical buoy.
11.3 A boat starting later than 5 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not Start
without a hearing. This changes rules A4 and A5.

THE FINISH
For Race 2 see Killyleagh Regatta SI’s.
For Races1, 3, 4 &5 the finishing line will be between a red and white post on the
committee boat displaying a blue flag and a yellow spherical outer limit buoy.

TIME LIMITS
The time limit for Races 1 is 2 hours. Time limit for races 3,4 &5 is 2 ½ hours. Boats
failing to finish within 20 minutes after the first boat in their Fleet sails the course and
finishes will be scored Did Not Finish. This changes rules 35 and A4.
15 PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS
15.1 An Arbitration System will be available for this event and competitors are recommended to
resolve disputes using this method. Boats penalised under this System may accept a 25%
penalty.
15.2 Protest time is 60 minutes after the finish time of the last boat to finish on that day.
15.3 Protest forms are available at the race office located at Quoile Yacht Club. Protests and
requests for redress or reopening shall be delivered there within Protest Time. The
expiration of Protest Time will be posted on the Official Notice Board.
15.4 Notices will be posted no later than 30 minutes after the protest time limit to inform
competitors of hearings in which they are parties or named as witnesses. Hearings will be
held in the protest committee room, located at Quoile Yacht Club.
15.5 Notices of protests by the race committee or protest committee will be posted to inform
boats under rule 61.1(b).
15.6 Breaches of instructions 17, 20 and 21 will not be grounds for a protest by a boat. This
changes rule 60.1(a). Penalties for these breaches may be less than disqualification if the
protest committee so decides.
15.7 On the last scheduled day of racing a request for reopening a hearing shall be delivered (a)
within the protest time limit if the requesting party was informed of the decision on the
previous day (b) no later than 30 minutes after the requesting party was informed of the
decision on that day. This changes rule 66.
15.7 Protests during Killyleagh Regatta will be decided as above unless it is a protest against a
yacht racing in another class in the Regatta when it should follow KYC protest procedures.
If another yacht protests a Sigma then that Protest shall also be heard as part of Killyleagh
Regatta.
16 SCORING
16.1 2 races are required to be completed to constitute a series.
16.2 There are no discards, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores.
17 SAFETY REGULATIONS
17.1 A boat that retires from a race shall notify the race committee as soon as possible.

REPLACEMENT OF CREW OR EQUIPMENT
Substitution of damaged or lost equipment will not be allowed unless authorised by the
race committee. Requests for substitution shall be made to the committee at the first
reasonable opportunity.

EQUIPMENT AND MEASUREMENT CHECKS
A boat or equipment may be inspected at any time for compliance with the class rules and
sailing instructions. On the water, a boat can be instructed by race committee equipment
inspector or measurer to proceed immediately to a designated area for inspection.

HAUL-OUT RESTRICTIONS
Keelboats shall not be hauled out during the regatta except with and according to the terms
of prior written permission of the race committee.

DIVING EQUIPMENT AND PLASTIC POOLS
Underwater breathing apparatus and plastic pools or their equivalent shall not be used
around keelboats between the preparatory signal of the first race and the end of the regatta.

RADIO COMMUNICATION
The Committee boat shall be operating on channel 37. Except in an emergency a boat shall
neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not
available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones.

DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to
Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal
injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

INSURANCE
Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a
minimum cover of £2,000,000.00 Pounds Sterling or the equivalent.
