MYP English Level 4 is a yearlong English Language Arts course that will prepare scholars for the rigor of college-level AP English Language & Composition, AP English Literature & Composition, and DP English courses. In MYP English Level, scholars will read and analyze a diverse body of literature, write extensively for both timed and take-home assignments, and develop critical thinking and creative skills through a variety of projects and presentations.

Course Goals

This class will strive to achieve the following goals;

1.

100% of scholars will pass the English I STAAR/EOC assessment.

2.

Scholars will conduct and extensive analysis of at least three full-length works of literature (novels, plays, etc.).

3.

Scholars will learn introductory ACT/SAT vocabulary and critical reading skills.

4.

Scholars will learn analytical reading and writing skills for the AP and IB exam.

Student Expectations

In order to maintain a positive classroom environment conducive to learning, the following student expectations will be in place:

1.

Scholars will come to class prepared with their homework, novels, and supplies (binder, pencil, pen, paper, etc.) every day.

2.

Scholars will raise their hands when they wish to speak, and will only communicate when they are called upon by Ms. Fletcher.

3.

Scholars will use respectful language in the classroom and will discuss and write about school-appropriate topics.

4.

Scholars will respect the property and space of their fellow classmates, Ms. Fletcher, and the school.

Discipline Policy

To maintain consistency with school wide procedures, consistent behavioral issues will be tracked with the HEROES program. Scholars will be rewarded consistently for display of IB traits, while demerits will be given for inappropriate behavior. Smaller infractions will be handled by Ms.

Fletcher (on a case-by-case basis). Disciplinary action may include;

Make-Up Work

Scholars with excused absences as documented by the attendance office will be allowed to make up missed assignments, tests, and quizzes. Scholars must turn in make-up work within a timely manner (no longer than 1 week later).

Scholars will be able to redo major assignments and exams only one time. This redo opportunity will be made available only after a scholar has attended a mandatory tutorial session with Ms. Fletcher. The score of the redo and the original exam or assignment will be averaged to calculate the scholar’s grade for that assignment.

Late Homework

Generally, late homework is frowned upon and students are encouraged to complete and turn in their assignments on time. This year late work will be accepted, however scholars will lose 10 points for each class period that an assignment is not turned in. This means that if an assignment is one class period late, the maximum score the scholar will receive is 90/100.

Please note: to ensure fidelity, NO ASSIGNMENTS will be accepted after graded assignments have been returned to the class.

Hall Pass/Homework Pass

Each nine weeks scholars will be given 1 hall pass. A hall pass allows you 5 minutes outside of the classroom. At the end of the 9 weeks if you have not used your hall pass it will become a

“homework pass”, thereby exempting a scholar from any missing homework assignment. Hall

Passes can only be used during Independent Practice time.

*A used hall pass will be recorded in the Gradebook. Please do not make copies of this page (you will only be wasting paper).

Grading Policy

For essays and major assignments I will use the following rubric as designated by the International

Baccalaureate. A score of 5 establishes that a scholar has met expectations for that assignment.

.

Overall the class work will be split into 4 categories: Projects, Assessments, Homework, and Class

Participation. In order to be more aligned with a college setting, we will complete projects on a regular basis and these are worth a major grade. Please check the school website often to know when your scholar is expected to complete these assignments.
