Carrillo 3 Gabriela Carrillo Language Arts Mrs. Kidd 3rd period 1/13/15 Career Research Rough Draft Choosing a career is one of the biggest decisions people make in their lives and while some have a hard time deciding what they want to do in life, others already know what their calling is and have no problem in choosing between the mass of career options that exist in this world. Since a young age I’ve known what I wanted to do with my life. At the age of seven my grandma died of a tumor and I was heartbroken, but her death made me realize that I wanted to do something that involved helping people and making them feel better and in that moment my career was set. I thought about doctors and how they help the sick and always make me feel better when I was sick and I knew that that’s what I wanted to be when I grew up. Around 2 years later I found out that there was a whole range of different doctors out there to choose from and it was pretty overwhelming but I became intrigued and unlike most kids my age I actually enjoyed going to all the Doctor appointments and seeing how things worked in a doctor’s office. Since then science has become a passion of mine and I’ve become very interested in medicine and how the body works and reacts to different things. After years of thinking of what type of branch of medicine I wanted to go into I recently decided to become a physician, some one who practices medicine, which is concerned with promoting, maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, injury, and other physical and mental impairments. There is a long history of physicians and many requirements to get the job as well as different positions and thinks to do to become a physician. Physicians have been practicing medicine in the U.S for centuries but they became very relevant to the United States in the early 1960’s and because there was very few physicians a man by the name of Eugene A. Stead Jr. put together a group of Physician assistants who graduated in October of 1967. World War 2 made the demand for physicians that much greater. Medicine has been being practiced for centuries and the first ones were known as healers, healers were able to mix different plants and liquids to make medicine that helped the sick. There were very few that could master the skill of healing therefore they were believed to have supernatural abilities in some tribes. There are paintings that have been recorded to be over 27,000 years old and showed people using plants and remedies for medicinal purposes. This is became the first medical knowledge base, and has then been passed down through tribes. The famed Greek physician Hippocrates is one of the most famous figures to this career Carrillo 2 because he was influenced by Egyptian and Babylonian and therefore wrote the Hippocratic Corpus, this is a collection of around seventy early medical works from ancient Greece associated with Hippocrates and his students. Hippocrates also invented the Hippocratic Oath for physicians, which is very much still being used today. To become a Physician one must first complete medical school and earn their MD degree and even after this is done there is still additional training required before one can start practicing medicine on patients. One should major in chemistry, human genetics, or physics in order to receive a bachelor’s degree in science and biology and become a physician. Some colleges that offer this program are the University of Utah and Columbia State University, both of this colleges have excellent medical programs. To get to this career one should take a college medical class while still in high school, one should also get a CNA license to start off and complete an internship at a medical office to see how the career works. The route to getting to this job is very difficult and time consuming, one has to learn everything related to medicine and make some tough decisions, it takes 8 to 10 years to become a certified physician therefore there is a lot of things that have to be done. To succeed in this career one must learn to separate their social life from their work life and not let a bad day influence how they treat their patients. One should also have good communication skills, and should be able to make good decisions and be willing to help others. On a daily basis Physicians examine patients that aren’t feeling well and help them in deciding what the best route for treating them will be, whether it be medication, seeing a another specific type of doctor, surgery, or just at home treatments. Physicians spent an average of 57 hours a week working at hospitals. The ones working below are the PA’s or physicist assistants they report to and help the physician. Physicians usually receive an amount of 26 paid vacation days a year. The most challenging things of become of a physician would be how time consuming it is, one spends many hours a day at the hospital and doesn’t have time for many things especially to sleep. It can also be stressful and difficult. Although there are many more advantages like having the satisfaction of helping others, good income, making a difference, earning peoples respect, and learning new skills and experiences in life.
