AVI2O Scratchboard Project
Scratchboard is the world’s most direct engraving medium. To create an original
engraving, the artist first develops a pencil sketch which is then transferred to the
scratchboard. Scratchboard is a white clay board which has been coated with black ink. A very
sharp knife is used to scratch through the ink surface which results in a white/silver engraving
on a black background.
Scratchboard is a wonderful medium to represent wildlife
because of the intricate detail, sharp-contrast, and wonderful
texture that can be achieved –the subject comes alive before your
eyes as the engraving progresses.
Your tasks:
1. Create a fully-rendered sketch of an animal, face, or scene (your subject is shaded using
a variety of value, details, form, and an evident light source). Select an image that is
detailed and textured. Please use graphite (pencil).
2. Using white pencil crayon on black Bristol board, you will practice applying the various
degrees of light value that are a part of your chosen image. Use the hatching technique.
Remember, you are applying the light values, which is the opposite technique to adding
value through pencil in our sketchbooks.
3. Lightly sketch your image onto the surface of your scratchboard using pencil.
4. Using the scratchboard carving tool, etch your subject onto the scratchboard.
Tips:



Be consistent with your lines. They should appear to move in “one direction.”
The smaller the spacing is between your lines is, the better your image will appear.
Use stippling for very fine details.
