The successful candidates will join a team of 13 established consultants and provide care for medical inpatients at QEUH and diabetes and endocrine outpatients at GGH. The posts offer the successful candidates the opportunity to develop a sub-speciality interest, joining colleagues with interests in all major subspecialties in diabetes and endocrinology. One of the posts is a replacement for a previous post and interests in diabetes and pregnancy and, in the future, diabetes inpatients would be welcomed. The 2nd post is a newly established post and sub speciality interests will be discussed with the successful candidate. The specialty is supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The department has a strong academic background and close links with the University of Glasgow. The posts come at a time of major changes in the way clinical services are delivered in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and will be integral to the planning and development of Diabetes and Endocrinology services in the city in the coming years. Applicants must have full GMC registration and a licence to practise. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT in Diabetes/Endocrinology and General (Internal) Medicine or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of Interview. Queen ElizabethUniversityHospital, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is a new purpose built hospital that opened its doors in May 2015. The hospital has 1109 beds and will provide medical care to a population of around 700,000 people in west and south Glasgow. The hospital will provide the full range of medical and surgical services and many tertiary specialties including neurology, ENT and renal medicine. It will also be one of the 4 hospitals in Scotland to admit major trauma cases from next year. Development of the new QEUH has allowed inpatient and acute medical care from the Western Infirmary, Victoria Hospital and Southern General to be consolidated to a single site. Outpatient diabetes and endocrine care will now be delivered by a team of 15 consultants in diabetes and endocrinology (including these posts) at the QEUH, Gartnavel General and Victoria Ambulatory Care Hospital. All major subspecialties are catered for including clinics for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, insulin pump services, transition and adolescent diabetes, general endocrinology and bone and mineral metabolism delivered from all three sites. The South Glasgow Diabetes Pregnancy service is based at the QEUH. Sub specialty endocrine activity at the QEUH includes clinics in endocrine genetics, endocrine hypertension, a joint endocrine oncology clinic and Turners clinic. The QEUH is also the site of the West of Scotland regional neurosurgical service generating a large workload relating to pituitary disease and will be the centre for specialty inpatient endocrine investigation. Taken together the QEUH offers an excellent environment for the development of subspecialty interests. One post will also cover 16 beds in the receiving complex on a rotational basis with colleagues in diabetes & endocrinology as well as rheumatology and infectious diseases. In addition the post holder will have a commitment to care of inpatients. 3 The other post will cover the 28 bedded Immediate Assessment Unit,, providing weekend daytime cover on a rotational basis to the unit as well as providing weekday cover which may be either on a fixed or a rotational basis. West Glasgow Diabetes and Endocrine Unit, GartnavelGeneralHospital The Gartnavel campus is situated in the west end of Glasgow and provides out-patient and some in-patient specialist services for the area. The West of Scotland Cancer Hospital, Glasgow Centre for Integrative Care and Gartnavel Royal Psychiatric Hospital is also on site. Diabetes and endocrine services are delivered in a purpose built unit. The Gartnavel diabetes clinic is the largest in Glasgow and offers specialist intensive insulin, pump, foot ulcer clinics and structured education. It is supported by a full multi-disciplinary team. There are general endocrine and thyroid clinics. We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the WolfsonMedicalSchool, based at GlasgowUniversity. There are extensive teaching commitments and all members of the units are involved in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates. It is expected that 9 programmed activities per week (4 medicine, 5 specialty) will be devoted to direct clinical care, with 1 programmed activity allocated for supporting professional activities. Around 4 or 5 specialty doctors in training in Diabetes and Endocrinology will rotate through the various parts of the unit at any one time from a pool of 15 trainees in diabetes and endocrinology in the West of Scotland Deanery. Other members of the multi-disciplinary team at Gartnavel General Hospital: Diabetes Specialist Nurses – There are 3 FTE band 6 and 0.5 FTE band 7 Diabetes Specialist Nurses, contributing to both outpatient management of patients attending the Diabetes Centre at Gartnavel General Hospital and to inpatient referrals/patient reviews at QEUH. Diabetes Dietician – There is 0.8 FTE band 6 dietetic support at the Diabetes Centre, with a rotational 0.5 FTE band 5 post. Podiatrists – There is a 0.8 FTE podiatrist within the department. The duties of the two posts will include: Post 1: i) General medical receiving in the acute receiving unit. The Consultant is responsible for the assessment and admission of referrals on a “physician of the week” system, which involves twice daily ward rounds on the 16 bedded Acute Receiving Unit2, on a Monday to Thursday (~ 4 times per year) and Friday to Sunday rota (~ four times per year) as well as responsibility for cover overnight on a rotational basis. At this time it is expected other elective commitments are cancelled (2DCC). ii) Inpatient cover for ward and associated boarding patients- Monday to Friday 36 weeks per year (2DCC). iii) Additional specialty sessions in diabetes (2 DCC) and endocrinology (1DCC) at GGH and the antenatal clinic at QEUH (1DCC). Post 2: i) The Consultant is responsible for assessing and managing patients within the 28 bedded Immediate Assessment Unit)providing weekend cover on a rotational basis (1 DCC) as well as a fixed commitment during Monday to Friday (2 DCC). ii) Inpatient cover for ward and associated boarding patients- Monday to Friday 36 weeks per year (2DCC). iii) Additional specialty sessions in diabetes at Gartnavel (2), and in support of inpatient diabetes at QEUH (1). There may be some flexibility in allocation of the subspecialty sessions depending on the interests of the successful candidates and with agreement of the clinical director. Teaching Undergraduates attend throughout their training. This involves a commitment both to supervise students in clinics and bed-side teaching. There is postgraduate teaching for junior staff in the directorate and a programme of nurse education. The directorate holds regular lunch-time general medical educational meetings. 5 Research There are audit and research opportunities including the possibility of establishing research links with colleagues in the University of Glasgow. Administration SPA time is allocated within the job plan to support the post holders personal appraisal and revalidation work d) Duties of the posts: The duties of the post holders will be provision with Consultant colleagues of all aspects of the service for General Medicine at the QEUH and Diabetes/Endocrinology at the QEUH and associated hospitals in this case predominantly Gartnavel General Hospital. All of this work will include clinical care, audit, teaching, the provision of advice by telephone and consultation, and through appropriate administrative and committee work as agreed.
