Seminar on Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) & Infrastructure Investment Trust
Friday, October 17, 2014
5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
IMC’s Walchand Hirachand Hall (4th Floor), Mumbai
Dear Member,
The Indian Merchants' Chamber’s Capital Market, Direct Taxation and Real Estate
Committees have jointly organised a seminar on Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) &
Infrastructure Investment Trusts on Friday, October 17, 2014 from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm in
the Walchand Hirachand Hall (4th Floor), IMC, Mumbai.
REITs and Infrastructure Investment Trust (‘InvITs’) are currently attracting significant
attention, especially given the government’s thrust on real estate and infrastructure.
REITs are finally getting off the ground after discussing for couple of years. SEBI has already
come out with detailed regulations to govern the design and operation of REITs. REITs
receive special tax considerations and typically offer investors high yields, as well as a highly
liquid method of investing in real estate.
SEBI had come out with a consultation paper on InvITs on December 20, 2013. InvITs shall
invest in infrastructure projects, either directly or through SPV Special Purpose Vehicle. In
case of PPP (public–private partnership) projects, such investments shall only be through
SPV. InvIT is to provide a suitable structure for financing/refinancing of infrastructure
projects in the country. Several existing infrastructure projects which are under
development in India are delayed and ‘stressed’ on account of varied reasons including
increasing debt finance costs, lack of/locked up equity of private investors in projects
precludes them from an interest in undertaking new projects, lack of international finance
flowing to Indian infrastructure projects, project. All this underlines the importance of
InvITs.
Hence to understand the pros and cons of REITs and InvITs from the market regulators,
policy makers, real estate developers and tax experts we have organised this seminar.
