Astronomy Chapter 1: Earth, Moon, and Sun Section 1: Earth in Space Seasons Foldable Name: Hour: THE SEASONS Task: You will create a foldable to help better understand the four different seasons on Earth. This foldable will include both diagrams and notes. Step 1: We will fold and cut the paper together as a class. Step 2: Begin drawing and labeling the front of your foldable. The front will include a drawing of the sun, a drawing of Earth; all with the same axis (4), and labeling of each season (Right: WS, Top VE, Left SS, and Bottom AE). Please use the picture below as a guide. Step 3: Now it is time to glue/tape diagrams to the inside of your foldable. Please make sure that each diagram is associated with the proper season. You will glue/tape these to the inside triangles. You can find the diagrams on the next page. Astronomy Chapter 1: Earth, Moon, and Sun Section 1: Earth in Space Seasons Foldable FOLDABLE DIAGRAMS Name: Summer Solstice Hour: Winter Solstice Step 4: Take notes on each of the seasons using the guided questions on the next page. You will find these answers in the book on pages 10-13. Winter Solstice Which end of Earth is tilted towards the sun? Which hemispheres are receiving winter and summer? What is the relationship between the sun and the equator? What day is found in the winter solstice? Summer Solstice Which end of Earth is tilted towards the sun? Which hemispheres are receiving winter and summer? What is the relationship between the sun and the equator? What day is found in the summer solstice? Astronomy Chapter 1: Earth, Moon, and Sun Section 1: Earth in Space Seasons Foldable Name: Hour: Vernal Equinox Which end of Earth is tilted towards the sun? Describe the amount of energy that each hemisphere receives from the sun. How many hours of day? How many hours of night? Which date is the beginning of spring? Autumnal Equinox Which end of Earth is tilted toward the sun? Describe the amount of energy that each hemisphere receives from the sun. How many hours of day? How many hours of night? Which date is the beginning of fall? Step 5: Answer the following questions on the back of your foldable. 1. Figure 4 on page 10 describes how sunlight hits Earth’s surface. Where is more direct sunlight found? Where is more indirect sunlight found? 2. Why does Earth have seasons? 3. What is the tilt of Earth’s axis? 4. Define the following terms: a. Solstice b. Equinox c. Rotation d. Revolution e. Orbit
