Course Description
This is a second-semester course in advanced Chinese language. This course is designed for
students who have been learning Chinese for at least 2 years and/or have mastered about 400
Chinese characters. We are going to focus on advancing the fluency and diversity of the language in
speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course will continue to improve students’
expressive capability by teaching different ways of Chinese expression in order to have a deeper
understanding of the language and culture, as well as communicating with native Chinese speakers.
The purpose of the course is to prepare students for real-life experiences in China or similar
situations.
Please note: This course may not be taken for UK credit.
Learning Outcome
By the end of the semester, students’ accuracy rates for aural distinction of Chinese sounds and
pronunciation of Chinese words will increase to 90% .The students will be able to recognize 600
characters and write 500 characters provided by level 3 of the HSK vocabulary syllabus. In addition,
the students will be able to use more than 30 basic sentences and 20 complex or compound
sentences to express themselves. Students will also be able to write a passage of about 500 words
that states their opinion clearly and vividly. The goal of this course is to improve students’ listening
and speaking skills, and help them to expand their abilities in reading and writing that will be
helpful for deeper studies in Chinese.
Evaluation and Certification
There are two tests during the semester and a final examination at the end of the semester. Upon
passing the final examination, students will receive a “Certificate of Completion” for Chinese level
3B from UKCI. Students can also take part in the HSK (the “Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language”)
and if they have reached the corresponding level, are eligible for scholarships to travel or study in
China. In addition, students also have the opportunity to go on a subsidized trip to China.
