School Council Meeting Minutes
23rd January 2015

Notes from previous meeting
SS has not fed back to Mrs Martin. She will do that today.
School Council have been acting at litter monitors – very little litter on the playground.
Anti-littering posters not made – to be with Miss Burke by Monday.
Anti-bullying Week was successful – the message was spread, we raised awareness of
anti-bullying.
Ravenna – Only one of two class council meetings has taken place
Pompeii – Only one of two class council meetings has taken place
What are you enjoying in school in this year?
Assisi – maths, science, lead up to the O2, Smugglers topic, trumpets
Ravenna – learning about dragons, playing safely
Venice – maths, science, literacy
Rome ~ residential, Two Gentlemen of Verona, sitting at tables instead of carpet, PE,
Smugglers topic,
Verona ~ Science, Writing, numeracy, Wolves in the Wall, topic
Pompeii – literacy, science, maths
Siena ~ Colouring in, PE, castle, playing
What could we do to improve school at the moment?
Assisi - soft playground (Discussed previously, not possible at the moment), things for
the playground – will be addressed in the spring
Rome ~ more school trips
Siena ~ Swimming pool (This will not be possible at this time.) Soft play (This will not
be possible at this time
Venice – Clubs – Martial Arts, Athletics
Pompeii – Learn about Egypt, More playground things
Ravenna ~ Class pet
How is the behaviour in your classroom at the moment?
Rome ~ Need to be more responsible, quite chatty
Venice ~ Good
Assisi ~ Good, we’re trying our best
How is the behaviour outside and in the hall at the moment?
Venice ~ OK
Assisi ~ Possibly a bit rough still
Pompeii ~ Too many people on the playground at lunchtime
Rome ~ Still too rough outside
What do you think makes teaching effective in our school?
Assisi ~ The teacher answering our questions, Linking things to real life
Rome ~ Booster Groups, Silly ways to help us remember things, Fun
Siena ~ Talk for Writing
Verona ~ Help to explain things
Are there ways we can improve teaching in our school?
Assisi ~ Better whiteboard pens
Rome ~ Groups within lessons working on specific objectives while others get on as we do
in maths,
What helps you to learn at school?
Rome ~ Going through your own work to identify errors that you can learn from,
Attention to individual needs
Assisi ~ Using silly ways to remember things
Venice ~ Good equipment that use yourself
What would make learning easier at our school?
Assisi ~ Working independently, Bigger classrooms (This will not be possible at this
time)
Verona ~ Repeating things, More resources
Rome ~ Notepads for everyone in school to have during carpet sessions
How does our school deal with bullying?
Rome ~ Assemblies, Ambassadors,
Assisi ~ Well – we try our best to stop it, we deal with it before it even starts with special
assemblies and things
Siena ~ Praying, We use kind hands
Venice ~ We tell a teacher and Mrs Lee deals with it
Ravenna ~ Talk to people, help each other, We can talk to the ambassadors
Is there anything else we should be doing to deal with bullying?
Rome ~ More reassurance, a councillor, Be brave enough to actually talk about it, A way
to report incidences anonymously
Assisi ~ Banner/Flag in the playground, Award for children who stay out of trouble all
year
Venice ~ Teachers talk to the people
Verona ~ More posters around the school about how to report bullying
Ravenna ~ Be more respectful to others
How do children behave as they are moving around school?
Generally felt by all to be quite good.
Some younger children running in corridors and on the stairs
Is there anything else we need to do to improve behaviour around school?
Monitors discussed
How can you stay safe online?
Rome ~ Talk to only people we know, Don’t give out details, If something has gone
wrong, report it, tell your parents, Don’t delete
Venice ~ Ask permission before using screens
Ravenna ~ Only use approved sites, Don’t spend money, Keep passwords a secret
Every class had ideas for this and knows what to do
Who could you go to if you had a problem you needed to talk about?
Parents, Teachers, Close friends, Older siblings, Anyone you trust, Anti-bullying
Ambassadors, School Council, TAs, MDSAs
What makes you feel safe in our school?
Rome ~ Fire alarms,
Verona ~ Lots of people to help us, Fences around the school,
Assisi ~ Ambassadors, Good organisation on school trips, Teachers, People don’t get
away with hurting each other,
Pompeii ~ Staff and Gates,
Siena ~ God
Venice ~ Look after each other, Teachers, Other adults
Ravenna ~ Teachers, Friends, Locked doors
Actions
Miss Burke to allow Year 6 school council to talk to whole school about being more
gentle on the playground during her hymn practise – to tell SB by Friday next week.
LM to talk to Mrs Lee about Anti-bullying message on the playground
LM to talk to Mrs Lee about reporting anonymously
Trial run of one monitor on the front and back stairs each day and in the downstairs
corridor at break and lunch – 3 day trial with Year 6 School Council members ~ To be
discussed again on Tuesday at 2pm
