Template Lung Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation
WHEREAS, lung cancer will claim (estimated # of lung cancer deaths in your state) lives in (your state)
this year, far outnumbering deaths due to breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined; and
WHEREAS, approximately 15% of lung cancer cases occur in people who have never smoked, and
over 40% in those who have formerly smoked; and
WHEREAS, lung cancer has only a 17% five-year survival rate; and
WHEREAS, funding for lung cancer research trails far behind other cancers; and
WHEREAS, Free to Breathe, a lung cancer advocacy organization made up of physicians and
researchers working together with survivors and advocates, is dedicated to doubling the five-year lung
cancer survival rate in the US by 2022; and
WHEREAS; the state of (your state) / the city of (your city) demonstrates its commitment by making
lung cancer a public health priority, in supporting advocacy work on behalf of lung cancer patients and
all those at risk for the disease, and by offering support and care for all those in our state / community
affected by lung cancer.
THEREFORE, I, Governor / Mayor (add name), do hereby proclaim November (insert year) as Lung
Cancer Awareness Month in (your state / city), and urge (your state / city) citizens to join our effort to
defeat lung cancer.
