Stanek, M., & Friedman, J. (1989). I speak English for my mom. Niles, Ill: A. Whitman.
I Speak English for my Mom is a wonderful picture book for teaching students
in grades 1-5 about English Language Learners. This would be a good book to
use to teach students empathy for the people all around the country who have to
depend on their children for almost every form of communication. It is not too
wordy, but the vocabulary is substantial, so it holds the interest of most
elementary school students.

This book on tape version of Chato’s Kitchen would work nicely as a listening

moves into the neighborhood. This book is full of Spanish vocabulary without
being too challenging. If you enjoy this, you should also check out the
Skippyjon Jones books.
