National Science Foundation- broad science & engineering interests, Internet of Things The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently released its second and final SBIR and STTR solicitation for fiscal year 2015. Proposals are due June 16. The NSF solicitations are popular among entrepreneurs because of the broad range of science and engineering technology areas they cover. The current solicitations include a new technology interest area entitled "Internet of Things" which reflects the growing attention this topic is receiving. The NSF SBIR and STTR solicitation cover the same technology areas including the following nine additional areas: -Educational Technologies and Applications (EA) -Information Technologies (IT) -Semiconductors (S) and Photonic (PH) Devices and Materials -Electronic Hardware, Robotics and Wireless Technologies (EW) -Advanced Manufacturing and Nanotechnology (MN) -Advanced Materials and Instrumentation (MI) -Chemical and Environmental Technologies (CT) -Biological Technologies (BT) -Smart Health (SH) and Biomedical (BM) Technologies Each one of the ten technology areas is comprised of multiple broad umbrella like topics. It is up to small businesses to propose more specific research topics that fit under one of these umbrellas. If you click on one of the technology areas on the list at http://www.nsf.gov/eng/iip/sbir/topicshome.jsp, you will be taken to NSF's individual SBIR/STTR umbrella topics for that area. NSF encourages advance communication with their program directors for each technology area to help gauge whether a proposed project meets their intellectual merit and commercial impact criteria. Companies should take advantage of this opportunity before committing 100 or more hours to preparing and submitting a competitive proposal. **See Section I. Solicitation Schedule below for links to all current solicitations.
