Writing Journal This year we will begin an exploration into the world of Writer’s Workshop, a writing program where kids get to select their own writing topics and produce amazing stories. For our journey, each child will need to collect magazine clippings and photos that they can use to decorate their Writer’s Workshop notebook. The items collected should be words, phrases, pictures and photos that represent your child and that help them to think of stories of their life. Everything must be flat and securely glued to the front and back covers of your composition book. For example, my notebook has photos of family, my favorite treat (brownies), my favorite book series, my hobbies (photography and scrapbooking, my favorite cartoon characters (Suzy Zoo), and an assortment of words and phrases that I found in magazines that describe me and ideas I like (Smart, Kidfriendly, Walking on Sunshine, A Great Idea Made Better, Play and Learn, neighbors, Whole Lotta Love, etc) You can get pictures, words, and phrases from magazines, computers, or personal collections. Here are some things that should be included on your journal cover: YOUR CHILD’S NAME - MUST include your child’s name on the cover which can be displayed using stickers, computer printouts, or hand written in colorful letters. Family and Friends: photos (include pets) of family members, celebrations, traditions, home, friends, etc. Travel: some favorite places, places you have visited, a vacation photo, places you hope to see some day, etc. Hobbies: a photo of you playing a sport, activities/hobbies you enjoy doing, collections Favorites: foods, colors, books, authors, games, music, songs, movies, TV shows, restaurants, snack foods, celebrities, Smiles: pictures that remind you of something funny or just make you happy. Thanks, Mrs. Toohey P.S. I will cover your child’s journal with contact paper so all pictures must lay flat on the front and back covers. Be Creative and Have Fun!
