Andrew Wheat Monroe High School Republic of Djibouti Third Main Committee: Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Death of Indigenous Languages In a world where languages are being lost every year, governments must take the responsibility and initiative to stop the inexcusable loss of culture. The Republic of Djibouti recognizes four languages spoken within its borders, and while none of these are at risk of being lost, many other languages from around the globe, sadly, are. Therefore, the Republic of Djibouti wishes to work with its allies and the international community as a whole to work to stop the death of indigenous languages that are unfortunately lost every year. It is Djibouti’s wish for international cooperation among all members of this body to stop this death of culture and to preserve these dialects and languages for posterity, and then to ensure that the loss of various forms of the spoken word is a problem we as a race will not have to deal with again. To this end, Djibouti is of the mind to provide funding to researchers to recover languages lost and to record the languages yet at risk so that they may never be threatened with extinction. This solution calls for an international effort from all nations to succeed, as Djibouti cannot preserve an entire world’s worth of languages on its own. We call to our allies around the globe to take up the ideals of this cause and to help us stem the loss of languages around the world and preserve them for all time.
