National Presentations
Truman VA researcher and MU Professor of Internal Medicine, Dr. Timothy Hoffman, presented
a paper entitled “Preclinical therapy of androgen independent prostate cancer using
combination 177Lu-BB2r targeting peptides and docetaxel” coauthored by Tammy L. Rold, Gary
L. Sieckman, Kelsey L. Richmond, and Ashley F. Szczodroski on Wednesday April 4, 2012 at
the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting held in Chicago, IL on
March 31-April 4, 2012.
During this study, Hoffman and colleagues investigated the utility of combining a therapeutic
radioisotope, Lu-177, with a novel prostate cancer targeting peptide developed by Helmut
Maecke, PhD at University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland to control the growth of prostate
cancer. The preclinical pilot studies conducted at the Truman VA demonstrated for the first time
significant prostate tumor control properties resulting in tumor shrinkage and prolonged tumor
growth inhibition. Ongoing translational studies are currently underway to define optimal dose
regimens and define the mechanism of action of this unique radiotherapeutic agent when used
in conjunction with conventional systemic chemotherapies.
Local Presentations
A joint collaboration between Truman VA reseachers and MU School of Medicine faculty was
featured during the Mizzou Advantage poster show at the Life Science Center on April 6th, 2012,
Dr. Timothy Hoffman and Kelsey Richmond, CNMT, from the Division of Hematology & Medical
Oncology, presented an update on the progress toward developing a Cancer Drug Development
Center. The presentation covered the collaborative efforts of VA and MU researchers supported
by a seed grant from the Mizzou Advantage program to establish a translational drug
development platform for the generation of new diagnostic molecular imaging agents for the
detection of cancer. Collaborating researchers on this project include Dr. Timothy Hoffman –
VA Research Career Scientist and MU Professor of Internal Medicine, Dr. Thomas Quinn – VA
Research Scientist and MU Professor of Biochemistry, and Dr. Jeff Smith – VA Research Health
Scientist and MU Associate Professor of Radiology
The Truman VA/MU Oncology research team made
three scientific poster presentations during the MU
2012 Life Science Week with Dr. Lindsay Donnelly, a
graduate student in the MU Department of
Veterinary Medicine & Surgery performing research
in the Hoffman laboratory, winning 1st place honors
in the Molecular and Cellular Biology category for
her presentation of “Treatment of castration resistant
prostate cancer using 177Lu-BB2 receptor antagonist
radiotherapy” authored by Lindsay Donnelly, Tammy
Rold, Kelsey Richmond, Gary Sieckman, Ashley
Szczodroski, Shadi Haddadin, and Timothy J.
Hoffman. Dr. Donnelly was one of over 90 poster
