CEDAR (Coal Education Development and Resources) of Virginia, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to facilitate the increase in knowledge and understanding of the many benefits the coal industry provides in our daily lives by providing financial and educational resources to local teachers and students. CEDAR of Virginia, Inc. was created in August, 2005 as a partnership between the coal industry, the business community, and educators, and is working with schools in Southwest Virginia. CEDAR provides grant money and educational materials to teachers for the creation and implementation of a study unit based on coal in their classroom. CEDAR also rewards participation and performance of these study units through awards to teachers, including a Teacher of the Year Award. Students are also invited to enter coal projects in an annual coal fair in one of the following categories: Art, English-Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Studies, or Technology-Multimedia. These projects are judged in grade levels of K-4, 5-8, and 9-12 with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awarded to each grade level and category. Overall subject area winners are also selected, as well as one Student Project of the Year Award. CEDAR’s goal is to enable our citizens to form a knowledgeable and unbiased opinion of the coal industry by targeting grades K-12 in all school systems located in Buchanan County, Dickenson County, Lee County, Russell County, Tazewell County, Wise County and the City of Norton.
