GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The PSP61012 Advanced Diploma of Translating reflects the skills and knowledge required to translate
special purpose texts from one language to another to convey information written using specific
terminology for a specific audience.
The PSP61012 Advanced Diploma of Translating aims to provide the student with the contextual
knowledge, bilingual skills in English and a LOTE and ethics needed to perform competently at a
professional standard corresponding to the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and
Interpreters (NAATI) translator levels.
The course is 21 hours per week of face to face classroom based teaching. In addition, students are
expected to engage in a minimum of 10 to 20 hours of self study each week.
ACCREDITATION
This is a Nationally Recognised qualification, and subject to final approval by NAATI, will give
graduates accreditation as Professional Level translators. Participants who successfully complete all
the assessment will be awarded with PSP61012Advanced Diploma of Translating.
TARGET GROUP
The key clients for this qualification are:
 Graduates of Diploma of Translating (PSP52312).
 New entrants to the industry who require a broad orientation of the industry and meet the entry
requirements of the course.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Students successfully finishing the Advanced Diploma course can gain employment in the public and
private sectors as a professional translator, either on a freelance or contract basis in areas such as
business, tourism, education, health and legal services.
In addition, many graduates may perform some translating as part of their principal duties in jobs
requiring translating, bilingual and cross-cultural communication skills. In areas such as, health and
community services, business, tourism and public relations, the medical profession, law and foreign
affairs.
ARTICULATION
Students completing this qualification may be eligible for credit against a university degree in
Translation.
PATHWAYS INTO THE QUALIFICATION
All ESL (English as Second Language) applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English with an IELTS
score of 6.5, or equivalent or completion of a recognized Degree or Diploma or equivalent in any
discipline from an English speaking country. In addition, all students are required to undertake an
intake test to demonstrate adequate competency in both English and LOTE (Language Other Than
English) as part of the enrolment process.
MINIMUM AGE
Overseas Students: Must be 18 years of age to apply for this course at Abbey College.

TEACHING METHODS
This course will be delivered using a combination of lectures, handouts, tutorials, practical exercises.
Participants will receive a workbook for each unit of competency. Students are required to complete
some of the activities in their own time.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
Assessments will include assignments, written tests, practical activities, portfolio, role-play and verbal
presentations.

Level 2, 770 George Street, Sydney.
FACILITIES
 Five large classrooms with both lecture and discussion configurations and audio-visual
presentation equipment.
 Computer laboratory with networked computers with internet and printer access.
 Internet accessed and other computer-based training tutorials.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners can obtain RPL in the training program on the basis of current competency. Learners are
advised to apply for RPL prior to enrolment as this may change the duration of their enrolment. They
need to provide evidence that they already have targeted competencies by, for example:
 Providing evidence of completion of related training programs
 Completion of one or more of the current training package units.
 Provide evidence of NAATI accreditation at the para-professional level.
 Providing evidence of relevant work experience.

 A non-refundable payment of RPL assessment fee is applicable;
 Overseas students: Subject to RPL assessment outcomes, Abbey College Australia will inform
visa granting authorities if granting RPL to an international student results in the shortening
of the actual duration of their course.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
This course comprises six core subjects and six electives. These are streamed into nine units of
translating specific competencies, with one business, one organisation and one writing competency.
