Topic of lesson linked to cultural traditions of Chinese New Year. To prompt students to think about other cultural traditions for new year. How have you embedded Functional Skills into your lesson? Learners to use dictionaries to help in literacy spelling. Practice of word classes to construct sentences. How have you differentiated for different learners’ abilities, level and learning styles? Use of different activities. One to one support in independent writing tasks, class discussion, extension activity, video clip, summarizing of clip on power point and written article for different VAK students, differentiated worksheets for levels, check and mark, directed questions Session Content and Timing – Timing Start time 11.15 – 12.30pm Teaching Method Describe the teaching methods and learning activities used in this lesson. Learning Activity 11.00-12.00 5 min 15 min 5min Tutor explains new class rules regarding stationary, uniforms and mobile phones. Learners to turn off and hand in mobiles to tutor to place in envelopes, bags under chairs, pens ready, register signed. Starter activity: Tutor to hand out cut outs of word classes and definitions. This is an initial assessment to gauge learners’ knowledge in this area. Starter activity: Learners to work in pairs to match word classes with correct definition. They are to use problem solving skills/process of elimination to match as many word classes as possible. Tutor to then hand out answer glossary sheet to those learners who complete and ask further questions about providing examples of words that are. i.e verbs, pronouns ect Learners to check answers against glossary and learnt about word classes they are unfamiliar with. Tutor to then prompt learners to feedback answers, and provide examples of words. Aims of the lessons are introduced. Using PowerPoint slide tutor to teach/revise types of nouns, verbs and tenses, sentence structures and connectives. Learners to listen and then ask questions about any points they are unsure of. Learners contribute verbal answers to short questions on the power point. Tutor to link sentence structures into jumbled sentences worksheets which are differentiated to different abilities. Extension worksheet nouns/ verbs underlining. 10min Tutor to ask open question o students about important dates in February. Then link to Chinese New Year via Youtube video http://www.history.com/topics/holidays/chinese-newyear/videos/history-of-the-holidays-chinese-new-year Learners to respond to question by feeding back important festivals/ dates in February. Learners to watch video clip. 35min Summary of Chinese New Year customs and traditions and celebrations in London. Tutor to explain: London hosting of Chinese New Year and learners to write an email to a friend explaining the event and inviting them to attend. Tutor to revise email layouts and prompt learners to contribute what makes up an email -Tutor to hand out article on London Chinese New Year event to read. - Tutor to hand out planning email sheets and eventually final draft email sheets to write up in neat. Before writing up in neat, tutor to individually check and mark planning. 15min Plenary/closer Tutor to check learning of word classes through completion of plenary worksheet and email layouts. 12.00 LUNCH TIME Learners are to initially discuss initial ideas/thoughts with class. They are to share their own opinions and interpretations on the music videos message and possible interpretation. Learners to contribute any knowledge they have on email layouts. - - Learners to utilise information in articles to formulate a draft email inviting a friend to the event. Learners are to make corrections/ proofread as requested by tutor. Learners to write up neat versions of emails. Learner to independently completed questions about word classes and email layouts.
