Jacques Lacan’s
Ecrits : Years between Mirror Stage and Jouissance
Our reading group in winter is part of a project in which we undertake to read Jacques
Lacan’s1966 collection of
Ecrits in its entirety from beginning to end. By the end of this reading group, we will have read about one-third of the entire collection. We start with Lacan’s “Seminar on ‘The Purloined Letter’” on January 10 and end with his “Response to Jean Hyppolite’s
Commentary on Freud’s ‘Verneinung’” on April 11.Chronologically, the texts are from the period after second world war to the end of the 1950’s, thus after the introduction of the mirror stage and before the emergence of the concept of jouissance in his thought. Our readings are based on Bruce Fink’s English translation
Ecrits: The First Complete Edition in English . The group meets on Fridays at 2pm. in Room 21-6 at 3610 McTavish St.
