Sculpture 2 Course Syllabus Overview of Program Our visual arts program is a four year intensive program with Design, Drawing and Studio classes which include painting, printmaking, jewelry, sculpture and ceramics. Our students take foundation classes their freshman and sophomore year and specialize in 2D or 3D studios their junior and senior year as well as their AP art classes. Our classes meet for 80 minutes, every other day, and students are expected to work before and after school as needed to complete their work in a timely manner. Course Description This is a multi level sculpture class. You will be working with advanced and beginner sculpture students. You will be provided a space to keep your supplies, projects, and folder to keep your notes and sketches in. Dependant on your preferred method of working will determine what materials you will be working with. We will, as a class, investigate a variety of media as well as sculptural artists working in said media. We will also investigate methods of working in three dimensions including additive, subtractive, fabrication, and assemblage. Skill Development Using the elements and principles of design, students will create and experiment with different media to learn the building techniques, surface decoration, and building in the round. Students will work in methods including additive and subtractive modeling techniques, assemblage, and fabrication. The first semester students will work with plaster for subtractive carving, board for construction design and fabrication, wood to create assemblage, and clay in additive modeling. Using the works created in the first semester as a maquette, students will create two large-scale sculptures using either clay, wood, wire, or metal. Written Work We will be writing critique sheets every six weeks. In most instances we will be using a form sheet and using the ceramics, sculpture and American Craft magazines. There may be instances in which you will need to do your writing in a gallery situation. At the end of each semester, you will be asked to write a report as part of your final exam. The report will be on either a sculpture technique or a well-known sculpture artist.
