Globalization Debate – Formative Assingment
________________________________________________________________________________
Introduction: As we have been discussing in this unit, globalization is a theme that affects every
person on this earth. We have also generally agreed that there are both positive and negative
aspects of this force, but is it more negative than positive or vice versa? This is your chance to
explore the issues in globalization more in-depth in the form of a formal debate!
Directions: The class will be split into two equal teams. One team will be assigned the position that
globalization in generally a positive force in the world, the other team will argue that globalization
is generally a negative force in the world. Each team member will choose one aspect of
globalization to research for debate. Aspects include economics, environmentalism, culture,
health, human rights, conflict and religion. You will have one class to brainstorm ideas and prepare
your position before the debate. As we are currently running MAP testing, you must research your
aspect for the debate independently! You will be required to cite an article or source on your
chosen aspect for the debate which you have independently researched. Please note, you do not
have to cite a journal article. You may use a video, photo essay, newspaper article, etc. as long as it
is a reliable source! An example of a point could be like this;
Language
¨It is very clear to me that globalization is having a very positive impact on the issue of
Language. Some people, such as author Norio Ota in her article ¨Impact of globalization on
Japanese language and culture ¨ say that globalization leads to the destruction and
disappearance of indigenous languages. But I feel that if every human on earth spoke one
of three or four languages, our ability to share ideas, avoid conflict, solve problems and
relate to one another will increase dramatically. Global harmony is more important that
preserving languages! ¨
You will be required to email your teacher a copy of your statement as well as the finished
copy of the source evaluation assignment on the day of the debate.
Marking: Your teacher will moderate and score the debate. Please note, you will not be
graded based on whether your side wins or loses the debate. I will use the following rubric
to assess each student.
You will receive two formative marks for this assignment. The first formative mark will be
for your participation in the debate itself, the second formative mark will be for the
quality of your statement and the source evaluation assignment which you will email to
your teacher.
