February ‘14 St. Hedda’s R.C. Primary School Spring Term Newsletter - 36 We all returned to the New Year, 2014 and what became an almost snow free half term! Topic This term our whole school topic is Africa. Class 2 have been developing their map skills, locating the physical features of the continent. They have been 'visiting' the different countries of Africa and learning about different arts, cultures and traditions. While looking at the Asante people of Ghana, we created our own class cloth by designing our own symbols and making our own stamps. We have also enjoyed tie dying and used our finished material to make cushion covers (with help from Mrs Baker) to put in our Prayer Corner. We are looking forward to visiting Flamingo Land and learning about African animals which will help us with our literacy work. Class 1 have looked at maps of the world and found the continents as well as some of the countries in Africa. We have made travel brochures on the computer and in art we have created silhouette pictures and repeating patterns for a border. We have been to Flamingo Land to look at African animals and learnt about these using the internet to research questions we had about the differences in animals. We have also made a game about the different habitats in Africa and looked at the animals that live in each. R.E. So far this term each class has been making their R.E. studies in two topics. For Years 3 and 4 their first topic was The Liturgical Year as it is found in school and church. We looked at the colours used by the church at different seasons. Our new topic is the Eucharist – listening and sharing. Years 5 and 6 have been researching, celebrating and responding to the work of mission. This was noted in the Diocese and then we looked at the work of CAFOD, St. Catherine’s Hospice and Whitby’s R.N.L.I. Now they are looking at the meaning of The Eucharist. In each classroom we are planning and setting up a Prayer Corner. Class 2 have been writing their own prayers so as to compose a book of prayers that the children can use. This half term class 1 have learnt about people who help us at church and thought about people who keep the church clean and in good repair throughout the week. We have also learnt about some of the many jobs that Fr Guiver has to do as our Parish Priest. We are now beginning a new topic learning about the Eucharist. Prayer Corner Mrs Baker has worked very hard creating a prayer area in church which we now use on a weekly basis. We are able to go into church and spend time writing our own prayers, spend time praying and look through and use the many lovely resources that have been made. St. Catherine’s Hospice We received the following certificate with a letter thanking us for our generous gift to St. Catherine’s Hospice following the “goodies” on sale at the Christmas play performances. Sport Cricket – Children from Years 5 and 6 took part in the annual Kwik Cricket festival at Whitby Leisure Centre. Throughout the afternoon the children played 4 matches which were against Glaisdale/Castleton, Danby, Egton and Goathland. All the children took part with great enthusiasm and enjoyed the festival. Netball – During this half term we have played one league match against Danby, the other tie against Castleton had to be cancelled. Gymnastics – Children from Class 1 took part in the KS1 Key Step Gymnastics held at Eskdale School. Throughout the afternoon the children performed in lots of different activities. This event was organised by SSCO Caroline Watson and helped run by sports leaders all from Eskdale School. followed by ‘circle time’ to discuss how children would react/what they would say to a bully. It was an enjoyable presentation and workshop. Students – Miss Jackson and Miss Humphries Miss Jackson and Miss Humphries have both completed a successful teaching practice with us over this half term, we wish them both well with the rest of their training. Fairtrade Last term we spent £90.95 on Fairtrade “breaktime products” to support Traidcraft. Mrs Shephed (our local representative) was delighted with this effort. PTA We will be having our next Bags2School collection on Thursday 21st March at 9am. Our next event will be an EASTER BINGO in Egton Village Hall on Friday 22nd March, doors open 6.30pm, eyes down 7.00 pm. Jazz In the month of March we will have four workshops linked to live music. As a school, we joined with Egton School at a concert in the village hall – a Jazz Concert! It was certainly lively and we all tapped and danced to the beat! This has been organised by a Jazz Residency Project (part of Live Music Now) and will prove enjoyable and a hands on experience. Trust4Learning “The Arts” As part of the Trust4Learning Year 5 children were invited to take part in an “Arts” activity afternoon at Redcar Academy.
