Before you decide whether to join the register it is important for you to understand why the register has been set up and what is involved. Please take time to read the following information carefully and, if you wish, discuss it with your own doctor, friends or relatives. What is the OCRRR? The Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) is a highly active, well-established research centre working primarily in the field of diabetes and lipid metabolism disorders to improve the quality of life and health of patients affected by these. The centre keeps a register of volunteers who are willing to be approached to potentially take part in research studies. By joining the register, you are giving us permission to inform you about new research projects and to approach you about potential participation in future studies. Why is research necessary? Before new treatments or devices can be used in clinical practice they must be carefully tested for their effects on patients and healthy volunteers. Clinical trials use volunteers to assess whether treatments are more effective than existing treatments, what the side effects are and whether they are safe. Who can join? We are looking for individuals over the age of 18 who are either: Healthy volunteers Volunteers who have diabetes (type 1 or 2) Volunteers who are affected by lipid metabolism disorders such as: elevated cholesterol levels, elevated triglyceride levels or both. Volunteers who are 1st degree relatives (parents, offspring, siblings) of patients with diabetes. How can you join and what would be involved? We will ask you to fill in and sign the “Permission to Contact Form” and a brief “Medical History Form” (enclosed) and return these to OCDEM. Once you are registered on the OCRRR, we will send you our quarterly research bulletin about present and future research activity and invite you to take part in new studies that we believe may be suitable for you. Most importantly you do not have any obligation to take part in any of our studies. Once we have contacted you regarding a study and you have expressed your potential interest, we will then invite you to OCDEM to discuss the study further and, if you agree, obtain your consent to participate in the study. Participation in any research study is entirely voluntary and once you have given your consent you can withdraw at any time without giving a reason. OCDEM will reimburse you for appropriate travel expenses. Some research trials may provide funding for taking part. Will my information be kept confidential? All information collected about you will be kept strictly confidential. Access to the OCRRR is strictly limited to a small number of authorised members of the OCDEM Clinical Research Unit (CRU). Any information about you that leaves the CRU will have your name and address removed so that it cannot be traced back to you.
