Weekly News: Week of Jan. 26, 2015 Mrs. van Os, Grade 2 Reading: Our story this week is “The Quilt Story,” Story 1, Unit 4. Language: Adjectives Spelling: Our words are on the back of this sheet. Math: We had our Chapter 4 test last week. In general, our students did very well! Thanks for the extra homework help that many of you provided at home. We are working in Chapter 5 - Subtraction, and we will start “traditional subtraction “ – (borrow from the tens and give to the ones) this week. Please keep reviewing the addition facts. We had our “doubles + 2” test today and we will have our “nines test” on Wed. Upcoming Projects: Famous Black American Project – Due Mon., Feb. 2. Reminder: Please do not change the person you plan to research without first checking with me. Thanks. Looking forward to some great projects! Fractions Project: Due Tue., Feb. 10. Signing Agendas and Reading Logs: Please sign your child’s Agenda and look over their homework each night. Our communication and the successful completion of the night’s homework are essential for your child’s success this year. Thanks! Reading Logs: A few students are not turning in signed Reading Logs. It is sad for them to not receive our little treat on Friday. It is sad for me that they are not reading regularly. Nightly reading is very, very important to your child’s reading progress. The completed Reading Logs count as a 100-point grade, equal to a test. A zero wrecks your child’s average. Please, please make Reading Logs a priority. Please keep your child supplied with erasers and pencils. Thanks. SNOW – The Northeast is in the path of a big snow storm. Who knows when it will be Birmingham’s turn? Last year’s blizzard is still a fresh memory. If your child is a car rider, please come get your child at the sign of the first flake!! Last year, I didn’t even know it was snowing until a parent called the room on our classroom phone (back when we had one!!!) and said that she was coming to pick up her child. I opened our frosted window (that we can’t see out of) and was amazed that we seemed to already have an inch on the ground! I have a medical condition (including age!!) that makes it very uncomfortable for me to sleep on the floor or on a mat at school. I love, love, love your children and I am trying to give them the very best second grade year that I can, but I want you to know that I will be leaving as soon as I am allowed in the event of snow. (Last year, 25 teachers and 75 students stayed over night. ) Please be sure that I have a phone number where you can be reached at all times. I will be using my personal cell to contact you (car riders) in case of snow to tell you to come get your child. Children who regularly ride the bus home or a van to Day Care will be sent home on the bus or van if buses and vans are running. Please be sure that your child has a safe place to go in case the bus drops your child off for an early snow dismissal and you are not home. Last year, the buses ran, but some of the vans did not since the Day Cares were closing. Please check in case of snow to see if your child’s van is running. Thanks!!!!!
