EOPS/CalWORKs/CARE



EOPS/CalWORKs/CARE is happy to announce the hiring of their new EOPS/CalWORKs/CARE Assistant
Director, David Brown. His office is located in the CalWORKs/CARE office in SSVC 205B.
The sad news is: Lorena Perez has left El Camino College after 12 years of service. She has accepted a position
in the EOPS/CalWORKs/CARE department at Golden West College.
The two full-time EOPS Counselors will no longer be teaching a Human Development course effective the
second eight week session of the Fall Semester 2015. This will allow both counselors to return to their
counseling assignments full-time to meet with students as outlined and required in Title 5 EOPS
Implementing Guidelines.

PS-MAPP
 The contract has been renewed for the 2015-2016 school year. Staff attended a refresher with The
Community College Foundation training regarding the requirements for the first day of the training.
Student Advocacy and Support
 During the month of August our office was visited by 14 students seeking assistance with enrollment,
financial aid and registration.
 We are working in partnership with The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Torrance office
Transitional Coordinator. Collectively we have been establishing contact with identified students to assist
them in completing the enrollment and registration process for the fall semester. The Transitional
Coordinator will be on campus in SSVC 216 to assist students on:
o September 3, 2015
o October 8, 2015
o November 5, 2015
o December 3, 2015
 We continue to work with the John Burton Foundation around Priority Registration. The purpose of this
project is to develop strategies to better inform and support foster youth access priority registration.
Adult Education Liaising
 We continue to respond to the students who contact us. Their needs vary. The students are referred by the
Adult Schools and they are supported wherever they are in their process to successfully transition into El
Camino College.
Financial Aid





The Financial Aid line is shorter now compared to the first two weeks of fall semester, with the exception of
the normal busy period between 12pm - 2pm.
The Financial Aid office is in process of running Summer Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) calculations for
students who attended Summer 2015 sessions.
The El Camino College Financial Aid Office disbursed over $5 million in Pell Grants and Supplemental
Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) to eligible students during the first week of the fall semester, two
days earlier than anticipated.
The El Camino College Compton Center Financial Aid Office disbursed over $1 million in Pell Grants and SEOG
Grants to eligible students during the week prior to the start of the fall semester, one day earlier than
anticipated.
The Financial Aid Office is working with Financial Aid Television (FATV) to review the contract for service for
the next year. The contract will be forwarded to Rocky Bonura in Purchasing for his review and
approval. FATV offered to provide at no charge up to five FATV videos that El Camino College and El Camino
College Compton Center plan to use to advertise the changes to Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOGFW)
eligibility and to translate some pre-existing English language videos into Spanish, including closed captioning
which is compliant with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).

The Financial Aid Office is working with the Chancellor’s Office, the California Student Aid Commission
(CSAC), and Information Technology Services (ITS), to initiate, award, and disburse the new Full-Time Student
Success Grant (FTSSG). The new grant program provides supplemental grants to community college Cal
Grant B recipients who are enrolled full-time (12 units or greater) for the 2015-2016 Award Year. El Camino
College and El Camino College Compton Center will each receive an allocation for this new grant program.
The Financial Aid Offices at El Camino College and the El Camino College Compton Center will be hosting an
all-day joint retreat on Friday, October 16, 2015. The event will take place on the Torrance campus in the
Administration Building, Room 131.
The Financial Aid Office is awaiting further guidance from the Chancellor’s Office about how to respond to
the recent passage of California Senate Bill 725 which allows for 2015 high school seniors without the
California High School Exit Examination to receive high school diplomas. This new legislation will have
implications for California Assembly Bill 540 students and students who had reported on their admission
application that they were not going to receive a high school diploma.

program recruitment.
New Student Welcome Day on August 19th was a huge success. 350 students were anticipated but nearly
500 attended. Plans to expand NSWD are already being discussed.
Outreach Counselors will be assigned their respective high schools this month. Counselors will begin meeting
with and contacting high schools to set up regularly scheduled events and contact times.
Fall college fairs begin this month. To date, Outreach has already agreed to attend more than 30 college fairs
both in the region and out of state. Additionally, a significant number of information sessions, campus tours,
and application workshops are already calendared.
